I have a 19" Element HDTV and I recently got an HDMI cable my TV supports 480p, 720p, and 1080i but there was another option that said "optimal resolution" when I set it to that the screen got smaller and turned to widescreen and it said:1440X900at60Hzwhich is the bestfor gaming between 720p, 1080i, and 1440X900 at 60Hz? Also is 1440X900 at 60Hz considered HD? If anyone knows the answers please tell me thanks!

720p is 1280x720 at 60Hz 60fps, 1080i is 1920x1080 at 60Hz 30fps interlaced. 1440x900 is most likely the native resolution of your TV considering it is 19". It should look better than 720p, 1080i will get scaled down to 1440x900 and be interlaced.

Cool. But what do you mean by it being interlaced? My apologies I don't know much about TV's. So it's better than 720p but is it better than 1080i or is it the same?

I just put it at 1440x900 at 60 hz and it looks pretty good but my next question is: is it still HD? Because when I look at it up close none of the pixels show up like they used to. If you know please tell me!

Interlaced is when the screen takes the odd numbered rows and diplays them one frame, and the even rows and diplays them the next. This is a left over TV format from when we were using CRT screens that had a scanning motion, they used to do it in an interlaced fashion. LCD's just make a composite of the two half frames and put them together. Because the two sets of rows aren't from the same frame it may make motion have artifacts from mismatched rows. So then benefit of 1080i is that motion may have artifacts, but the resolution is higher. You will notice better picture quality with a 1080i signal if you're running your TV at 1440x900. 1440x900 should still be HD, better than 720p anyway. The pixels may look a little different if it scales the image differently.

Like I said before thanks but I have one last question you said I'll notice better picture quality with the 1080i signal if I'm running it at 1440x900. My last question is do I have to manually run it like that or does it run it like that by itself? If I have to do it manually HOW do I do it?

It should do it automatically, If you feed the TV a 1080i signal it should scale it to 1440x900 automatically, so you don't have to worry about that.

Pwn, it matters what you are looking for is this playing videogames or watchin T.V.? if it is a 360 it'll automatically scale to your T.V's Rez, but if it is anything else it needs to be using 720p or1080i/p. (trust me.)

You'll be fine using your Xbox360 at the optimized resolution of 1440x900 60Hz. Every other source it should autodetect and adjust accordingly.

Again thanks very much... It is normal for the T.V. to make the display slightly smaller after I change it to the optimized resolution right?

How much smaller are we talking, you mean the letters and things on screen, or does it create a black border? If it makes the letters and things smaller, that's just from the higher resolution being used and is normal.

Oh, I know what's going on, the resolution 1440x900 is of the 16:10 aspect ratio. 720p and 1080p are both of the 16:9 aspect ratio, so your Xbox is introducing letterboxing so that the aspect is right. That's normal, if you don't like it you can change it back to 720p to have it scale to the whole screen.
