I have a RAM question. I currently have 1GB (2x512) and there at 333mhz, I just ordered 2GB (2x1GB) and there at 667mhz. My question is am I going to notice a huge difference while gaming?
here are some of my specs
CPU= Intel Pentium D 925
GPU= 8800gs
RAM= 1GB, soon to be 2GB
OS= Vista

I hope you ordered the right kind of ddr.
What is the difference between ddr and ddr2 and why is ddr2 faster yet cheaper then ddr?blackleather223
difference pin spacing on the physical side. Also different type of ram in the way it works. DDR is technically a faster format clock for clock as DDR2 never matured well enough. Just ddr2 has gone up to higher clock speeds as the chip makers left ddr behind. Thus since ddr2 is the accepted format now ddr production has diminished and will therefore start to become more expensive.

I'm not 100% sure but sounds lke you bought 240 pin ram for a 184 pin motherboard ... i hope ya didn't but if ya did don't try and put it in lol just send it right back in its package unopened
My Mom has a pc and it is an intel and well we had no idea that it could support ddr2 and so at this very moment in time it has a ddr 2x512mb in side right now and it has been like that for at least a year now and so far no problems at all. Now I know it can support ddr2 now I'll go and get that but some how the mobo allowed me to put the ddr in to it and there has been no big problems.
The only problem I have noticed and her as well is that it runs a little bit slow but aside from that nothing. I didn't force anything and I didn't like jery rig it some how all I did was pull out her old and put in the new and that was it.
Now my pc is only ddr but yet I was just wonder if it was possible to put ddr2 into a ddr mobo but I'm not going to do so just was wondering.

a)I seriously doubt it will accept DDR2 if it takes DDR, if it does then I would be incredibly surprised.
b)Yours wont take ddr2, the memory controller is built for ddr2. Not like it matters as the DDR2 switch ended up with slightly less performance than the comparable ddr cpus.
Ok as I said I was just wondering that was all.
Far as my Mom's pc it can except ddr2 but I installed a ddr instead cause I didn't know it could support a ddr2 ram.
Can you explain or some one in here explain whay her pc can do both. I'm possitive that the ram that is in there is ddr and the pc can except ddr2

I hope you ordered the right kind of ddr.
Oh yeah, I took about an hour making sure it was, then I noticed the memory finder at Newegg, it was pretty simple. But just to make sure here is my mobo and the RAM.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145098

Or keep it and build a whole new system lol. You may not want to send it back since then it costs you shipping and usually i think you'll have to pay something like a 15% restocking fee.Kurushio
You can just refuse the package and they take it back. And it costs no shipping and handling, I'm not sure about the restocking thing though.
But anyways I made sure it was the right ddr2 and it is 240 pin

what is your moms pc? DDR and DDR2 are different pin counts as well, so you couldn't use a universal socket.
and no, to return something you must rma it.
nope there were some mobos with both but they were rare though. and for the TC you bought a DDR2 stick because DDR could never be overclocked to 667MHZ at a relatively low price.Im pretty sure there arent any mobos that support both DDR and DDR2 since they take different connectors.

if running vista 64 3gb is minimum needed to run crysis etc because sometimes it jumps to 2.3gb that game fully maxes 2gbIQT786Yes that's true.

well I can't see anyway that it runs DDR, DDR2 will work however. Still there are only 2 memory slots and both of those are the same so they both use DDR2 memory.
Does pc2 mean ddr2 and if that is so then I was mistaken all to gether. I must of been thinking of another pc that I took out some ram and then put in.
Sorry for trying to convence you guys that a ddr could fit into a ddr2. Sorrry. I don;t usually make mistakes like that but I garentee this wont be my last.

bit off topic but is your system up yet? i'd like to know if you have any problems with the mobo like i did.Well dual or not I plan on getting a 3 stick of ram so that I'll have 2x512mb in one slot and 2x1 gig in the others and so I'll do that just to max out the ram slots.
Also if I was to upgrade anytime at all it would be down the road when I plan to build my next pc.

yes, pc2 = ddr2

are you on socket 754?
if your on 939, then thats a bad idea.
I'm running cpu-z and it says that I'm running in single mode not dual.
Could this be the reason. I have 1 gig in slot 1 and 2x512mb in slot 3 and 4 and could this be the reason why it says single or what.
yes most likely, or it could be that your mobo is so old that DUAL channel is not supported.I'm running cpu-z and it says that I'm running in single mode not dual.

[QUOTE="blackleather223"]yes most likely, or it could be that your mobo is so old that DUAL channel is not supported.Well having an even no. of ram sticks will only do dual channel and not with 3 sticks as he is running.I'm running cpu-z and it says that I'm running in single mode not dual.

For dual-channel to work, you need matching sticks. And more than likely, they need to go into slots 1&3 or 2&4. That's why most DIMMs these days are sold in matching pairs.I'm running cpu-z and it says that I'm running in single mode not dual.

To answer the OP's question, as much as your system can handle. Go to your manufacturer's website and check.covertgamer78I'm thinking about maxing out my mobo's RAM in the near-future myself, simply because good DDR2 is getting pretty cheap and Nehalem will likely begin the big changeover to DDR3. I'm already halfway there.

Yes very well said.XP = 2 GB
Vista = 4GB
Simple as that. Just stick with dual channel and you'll be fine with my advice.

2GB for FPS games, 4GB for games like Supreme Commander (trust me--it's a must).Wesker776But I would think, with prices as low as they are, if you can afford it, it can't hurt. Sure, you won't get a lot of performance benefits, but they'll still provide more flexibility and less swap space use.

Newegg has the 2gb kit from Crucial Ballistix for 30$ after the rebate so 4gig would cost you only 60$. Thats really cheap for such great sticks.
