Basically, I always play my games at 800X600 resolution so that it's full screen. However, I'd like to use a better resolution and keep the game full screen (as in no black edges on the sides of the screen). My question is how much does resolution affect performance?

Depends on hardware, but higher rez usually hits performance pretty hard. Although not as bad as AA. What is the highest res your monitor supports and what GPU/CPU?

You have a 9800GT and you play games at 800x600 o_0? Seriously you can max out almost all the games with that, with 2-8xAA (except Crysis) at 1680x1050.

The higher and higher you go in resolution, it hits your performance exponentially harder each time. However it does massively improve picture quality by getting rid of blocky textures and jagged edges. Anti-aliasing is what MURDERS your performance however. Resolution is a hard hitter, but doesn't knock out your PC.

Depends on the game. At 800*600 most games are limited by the CPU, not the video card, as you increase the resolution, most games become GPU dependent and perfomance decreases dramatically with an increased amount of pixels. For example in the ideal case1600*1200 would be 4 x slower than 800*600 is the game is entirely GPU dependent.

It can affect it alot. It all depends on your hardware and your screen, I have a 22" widescreen so I have it at 1680x1050 but this does require a beefy graphics card. How much are you planning to scale it up to, 800x600 is rather low so you should be fine to at least put it up to 1024x768.

I just want my games to be full screen, since I hate the black on the sides of the screen with 1024X768.

You're using a 4:3 screen ratio, so 640×480, 800×600, 1024×768, 1280×960, 1600×1200 should all be native to your screen.

If your getting black edges I'd adjust the the screen positioning through the screen settings on your moniter (they normally have auto adjusts).

If this doesn't work you may be using the wrong ratio. What size screen and is it widescreen?

I'm not 100% sure on the monitor, but it's an old Dell one, not flatscreen and not widescreen. Max res is 1280X1024.

IF you have an 9800GT and an E7300, you can max out any game at 1280x1024, you can use even 4xAA on Crysis and still get a decent framerate.

Right give it a go at 1280x960 or the max and see how the games play, if you're not getting the performance you want scale it down. It's really all trial and error at this point without knowing a bit more.

It really depends on the Vram(video memory) on the card. The more Vram the better for higher resolutions. While two cards can perform almost dead even at a 800x600 resolution, however once you turn up the resolution quite a bit the card with more Vram will perform alot more efficient. With PC hardware exceeding current game engines you should be quite elegant with a mid GPU to a high end GPU at a formidable resolution bud.

resolution gives u a hit in performance but increased fov actually lowers it more then resolution which is why 1440x900 rez performs worst then 1280x1024

after that u get small performance hit as u continue to increase the res as long as u have sufficient power of course most cards will experience a tank in fps when trying to run a game like crysis at 2560x1600 on max settings

I'm testing Crysis out now with 1280, and it seems to be running fine. However, just on a side not, anyone else have some really bad pop-in objects with this game?

Will help if ya post your PC specs, in addition to your monitor native resolution bud.

1280x? There's two different resolutions, I'm still guessing you're using a 4:3 ratio been a old dell screen. So 1280x960 should sort it out. Crysis does get a bit of pop-in on higher resolutions.

TC is suffering from Vram which the Crysis data is instead being sent to the main computer memory(ram), the data being sent by Crysis is not reaching fast enough to be accessed by the GPU; thus why pop in objects are occurring.

It's on 1280x1024. Even with the 800x600 I had some bad pop ups in Crysis. Beautiful game, bad pop ups, oh well lol. Anyway, thanks for the help.

Dude, usually monitors have options on stretching the screen to fit the tube. If you're getting black edges on 1024X768 I suggest you play with the buttons on your monitor for a bit.

I thought so. You'd think this wouldn't be a problem for a old 88 gtx with it's massive amount of vram.

A 8 series GPU is great for Crysis and by certainly is my favorite series of GPUs for operating PC Games magnificently with the adaption of Streaming processors built into the shader architecture.

My question is how much does resolution affect performance?Legendaryscmt

As a general rule the higher the resolution the more resource is needed, so if you set it up high your machine will run slower.

If your having trouble then the solutions are:

1) drop the detail, this lowers the amount of power needed and is free

2) get some more Ram - its a cheap fix and can help with borderline problems

3) get a new card - its more expensive but it works best in the long run.

Hope that helps

crysis experience large amounts of popup using default settings u need to creat config file and add certian configs that will greatly reduce popup with little performance hit.

Well I havn't research the configs you mention but I'm certain it's overwriting a command in how the data is being sent. Curious to know if the programmers for Crysis administrated anything about this.

For less pop ups try this config: http://www.incrysis.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=23117

Otherwise its the Graphics Card, i noticed a lot less pop ups after upgrading from the 9600gt to the gtx 260 core 216 and this on highest Settings.
