Half Life 2 was amazing. Doom 3 is exactly what you would expect from a Doom game, more atmospheric, but a Doom game at heart. I would get them both though.
Easily Half-Life 2.
Doom 3 is fun, but not revolutionary or well paced, and the story is practically nonexistant with weaponry that doesn't justify the over abundance of pure shooting in dark corridors that it has.
Purely vanilla, i'll have to say Half Life 2. Doom 3 has even worse weapon mechanics and mediocre level design.
But if you're going to mod them (which you will if you want a ton of more 'umph' out of these games) then both picks are worth it. Doom 3 modded looks better than a big chunk of current gen. games, plays better than the vanilla version, and overall, 90% of all the complaints with it are fixed. There's a decently sized modding scene around it, providing great improvements and aditional content.
Half Life 2 has, literally, infinite free content. And God knows how many of those are graphic mods. The Source modding scene is simply limitless.

Fast-paced proto-Arena shooters, in comparison to a lethargic psuedo-horror FPS? Where's the correlation?

From a gameplay standpoint, none, which was planned from the start and frankly quite happy they did.Don't get me wrong, Doom and Doom 2 are gems but changing it from ongoing action to Action/horror made sense considering how the gaming industry and gamers were then. Some hated the changes, Others liked it.
Doom 3.

Doom 3 was more similar to the first Quake than to the previous Dooms.
doom 3 coop is a lot more fun than solo, for example me and my friend playinhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbu7mvRo6wo
but hl2 is better in every way
Half-Life 2 is better.
But DOOM 2 is better than either, albeit by only a slight margin over HL2.
My opinion of course.
IMO, when it comes to Gameplay, DOOM 2 has not been beaten for a PC game. To hell with Graphics.
Only the GameCube's original Metroid Prime (of console games I've played) rivals DOOM 2 for Gameplay.
I'll have to give the nod to HL2 here. At least Valve kept the game interesting and somewhat fresh throughout. Doom 3 was rather repetitive.
well, i wouldnt say either of them has aged marginally better. hl2 looks less blocky, but if you take a look at episode 1 and 2 and how close the graphics are and how similar l4d and l4d2/portal 2 look due to the same engine, it kinda makes sense why it visually looks like it aged better. But in comparison to rage, doom 3 feels like it has far better graphics...aside from blocky character models. Both games have rather dated feel to the gameplay, both use medkits and no ironsight aiming ;) Although doom can somewhat remids of a halo clone or hard reset that i now see your sig. id say both are about the same in terms of how well they aged. It makes an interesting argument. Both are kind of poop now a days, but when they were both new, doom3 hands down.
Half-life2 probably aged a lot better though.

I really don't know of any modern game as unconventional and exceptional as HL2, except maybe Escape from Butcher Bay. And even then HL2 is the superior game.

It's boring game for today's standards.By today's standards? Have games reached a depth and subtletyof story-telling on parallel to Half-Life 2? Have games today attained the unmarred synthesis of gameplay elements, all integrated in a spectacular level design? It's today's standards that are inadequate in comparison.
which is better? Half-life 2 or Doom 3?elmerfud43
I like Half-Life 2 more. Both are great games but Half-Life 2 has a much better story, better characters, and more innovative gameplay (for the time). Doom 3 has better graphics and atmosphere but it was nothing new or special outside of that. It was the same old Doom which, while not a bad thing, didn't wow me as much or draw me in as much as Half-Life 2. if you are looking for an updated Doom experience or a twitch shooter then I would go Doom 3. If you are looking for a deeper experience that will suck you into the game universe then go with Half-Life 2.
It's boring game for today's standards.[QUOTE="SovietsUnited"]

Nope, there isn't a game that compares in terms of storytelling (and integration of gameplay elements).

Half Life 2 story was disappointing and all out average even when it came out in 2004. If you want an example of better storytelling, I suggest you give story-driven series like Legacy of Kain or Fahrenheit a try.
At the time it came out, it was considered revolutionary (and rightfully so) because of all innovations it made (use of physics, FPS driving sections, great AI, incredible graphics etc.). Today those elements are just taken for granted and it's nothing we'd be interested in playing today.
Simply put, it didn't age very well.

In what way is he being ironic? Everything he said is correct...stop trying to cause trouble by quoting internet memes in a pathetic attempt to be funny...because you're anything but...[QUOTE="Socijalisticka"]

This. HL2 pretty much defined what FPS needed to be at the time, much like what blizzard did with Warcraft and Diablo. They are still great games in their own respect but showing their age.
