A few weeks ago I posted a thread here about GTA IV not being compatible with Windows 8, though I was mistaken. I had given up on trying to make it work. So last night I downloaded The Sims 3 from Origin, a game I knew was compatible, I had the same issue. Something was seriously wrong. Believe it or not, Bitdefender was blocking these games from running for some reason. I disabled active virus protection, and all of my games work flawlessly now. I am pissed off though because I paid a lot of money for BD, I don't expect it to block legit programs. If you have BitDefender, and Windows 8, disable active virus protection before playing a game.

Never heard of that anti virus, but a lot of them block things you need, especially when they have to conect to an online server.

You can't even use MSE on Windows 8, it won't install because it is already built into the OS.  And using any other anti-virus conflicts with the integrated system.

It isn't that big of a deal for me. At least I got the damn game to launch.

It's probably blocking the game's exe from launching, I'm sure there must be a setting where you can put it to ignore the exe file from the game and it will launch just fine while still having the anti-virus on.

Yeah I tried doing that. Doesn't work. You can make an exception, but it still wouldn't launch. It blocks GFWL from working properly as well.

Then you need to allow GFWL and any exe in the game folder that accesses the internet.

I shouldn't have to do that though for an antivirus program that I paid for. Maybe the people that work on it should fix it.

If you're gonna pay for a system it should be Kaspersky.  Lesson learned, I guess..

If anyone else is still having problems with it, I had to download the desktop version of Games for Windows to get GTA IV to work with Windows 8. For some reason, it had problems with the built-in Games for Windows app. Works like a charm now though.

They may be a setting on how strict your firewall is, loosen it up a bit.
