So I'm planning on giving Rome:Total War another run, and I was wondering if there are any great mods out there that I should d/l before I start with a new campaign?

Hey there; a really good mod is Europa Barborum. Check it out: http://www.europabarbarorum.com/ It is the most historical accurate RTW mod to date, and adds so many features to the game. There so many things to say about this mod, but I can't really think of any now because I uninstalled RTW quite a while ago, and stuck with playing M2TW.

SPQR design philosophy seems is all about massive field battles so it makes it very easy to recruit large armies quickly.

Another one you might want to look at is Rome: Total Realism. They, like the EB group, strive to for historical accuracy as far as geography, kingdoms, and states go, as well as unit types. The map is very cluttered with settlements so you can expect a lot of siege work.
