I have friend who suffered from a stroke a couple of years ago. He's just started using a computer, but since the stroke, he's only got mobility in his right hand.

I want to set him up with:-

a) a good game

b) one you can play with just a mouse

c) one thats easy to get into - as I said he's new to computers, and probably isn't interested in a massively heavy/weird story.

I've looked through my game collection, but I'm kind of struggling.....

Any sensible suggestions appreciated.

Warcraft 3's multiplayer custom maps are pretty fun at first and most maps can be played with one hand.

Hearts of iron 2 doomsday is a very fun game once you get into it.

Other good games sims series, civilization series, sim city, black and white 2 and the movies.

Sorry about your friend. I know strokes can be very difficult to recover from. There are lots of Indie games which involve relatively simple game mechanics and can be easily played with just a mouse. World of Goo, Aquaria and others are all fun to play.

Diablo 1 and 2. Fallout 1 and 2. All of them are top-down so you have a skill bar which you click and movement is done via clicking with the mouse. There isn't a very heavy story with either of these, its mainly action orientated. He must try RTS games too like Supreme Commander. They can be played with just a mouse, but I don't know what his attitude is like - if he's squeemish, don't give him Dawn of War: The complete collection!

Almost any adventure game! Most are very laid back and easy to get into and only need a mouse to control. Id recommend almost any of the LucasArts ones and most of the Sierra ones from the early nineties. Also The Longest Journey. Grim Fandango is great but is keyboard controlled (pretty much its only fault) and may be more difficult. Turn based games are good too. Fallout, Jagged Alliance, X-COM etc are good but a lot more complicated. Many strategy games are more difficult but still playable with just a mouse ... id recommend the Warcraft series. Thats all I can think of right now.

Any RTS game should be able to be played with one hand. I would try Company of Heroes, World in Conflict, Starcraft (if he doesn't mind old games), etc. Me personally, I would get Company of Heroes + Company of Heroes Opposing Fronts. Trackmania Nations Forever can also be played with one hand, with the arrow keys that is.

My father has suffered several strokes over the past few years and has limited use of his right side. He plays mostly RTS games. They still require some keyboard use but it's mostly a single key to open inventory, pause, etc. I suggest games like Age of Empires, Titan Quest, Sacred, Diablo, any of the Sims games. I'd imagine as long as it isn't a FPS or MMO it would rely more on mouse control than keyboard. I don't know how sever the stroke was but an RTS game you can pause to strategize would be good, as the possible damage he suffered to his thought processes could make him frustrated if he can't keep up with the action on screen. Best of luck.

What does stem cell research have to do with strokes? I'm actually interested, not saying this in an aggressive manner.

EDIT: Ah, never mind. Google has yet to let me down: http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2008/feb/20/medicalresearch.genetics

Adventure games as others have suggested can usually be played with a mouse, ie, point-and-click adventures like the Broken Sword and Monkey Island series. They're old but still good.

For RPGs, you can play Neverwinter Nights and Dungeon Siege completely with a mouse (I know, because that's how I prefer to play them),and of course there are other action RPGs such as Sacred, Divine Divinity, etc.

As already suggested, most RTS games can be played with a mouse as well, so don't forget Age Of Empires series, Age Of Mythology, Rise Of Nations, Cossacks, Warcraft and others.

On a side note you can technically play some older FPS games like Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Heretic, Hexen etc., with one hand as well, because the default settings allow you to move your character through the levels with the mouse, and with a multi-button mouse you could bind other functions to the mouse instead of the keyboard (jumping, strafing etc.). Trickier to play that way, but possible.

Bejeweled, Alchemy, Peggle, Zuma...all those other PopCap games, most (all?) of which have free versions online. I enjoy playing them from time to time.

I personally do not recommend playing RTS games with only a mouse, despite all of the recommendations here. I agree with Trackmania though. Trackmania Nations Forever is free. I recommend playing on the "Let's Rock" server online (located in New York, as they are organized by location). All you need for that game is the arrow keys, but it's a lot of fun. I would recommend Civilization IV, but you said to keep it simple and that game is a bit complicated, so I don't know. Just thought I'd throw that in there. That somehow made me think of something else though: The Sims, although some people might be (understandably) turned off by the premise without actually playing it.

Most RPG's (not first person rpgs) and RTS can be played with one hand, Turn based games are a really good idea since you can take your time. He should try the Heroes of might and magic series since they are easy to get into. I have a buddy who isn't all into gaming but totally fell for Heroes of might and magic 5, i think its actually the only PC game he own and really play.

Well, basically any RTS/TBS might fit well to your friend's condition. I recommend HoMM III (TBS) which is the best game ever created IMO.

Solid Gold suggestions! Many thanks to everyone.

I think I'll get my friend started on Sims, Black and White, and Fallout1+2 (everyone should play Fallout) then try him with some adventure games. I'll leave the RTS games for just now, since the keyboards sometimes used to group units etc. (Maybe when his confidence + mouse skills grow.)

I'm going to checkout Hearts of Iron 2 doomsday, AudioSurf and Trackmania myself, they look really fun.

Apologies if I haven't mentioned your recommendation (there's too many to choose from), but I have put them on the "pending" list. I should be able to buy most of these games very cheaply on amazon/eBay, so I guarantee I'll get to it in the future.

My friend has a lot of time on his hands - if I can get him playing one of these great games, it would be no bad thing.

You can pretty much play any game with a 5 buttons mouse.

FPS/Third Person RPGs:

M1: Action,
M2: Forward,
M3: Use,
M4: Jump,
M5: Crouch.
Scroll Wheel: Switch weapon.
Key Pad Plus Sign = Reload.
Key Pad Minus Sign = Inventory.
Key Pad Enter = ESC.

RACING

M1: Accelerate,
M2: Brake,
M3, Nitro
M4: View Change
M5: Enter Challenge.
Key Pad Enter = ESC.

RTS:

Personal Taste.

Just be creative! ;)

yeah, the razer deathadder has 5 buttons... got it on ebay, brand new including shiipping for $35.

but for this situation i think it would be better to find one that has around 7buttons or so.

Pretty much RTS and turn based games.

If he's really up for a challenge I can suggest FEAR Combat - yes I know this is a competitive FPS but I've played it once only with a mouse and I was pretty damn good at it =)
