For all those who buy higher wattage PSU's just "to be safe".

A QX6800 at 2.93Ghz,2GB Ram,I HDD,optical drive, high end intel mobo, sound card and 8800 GT only uses 317W on "full load".So what kind of safety do you need when countless sites show similar results of power consumption. With a 450 or 500W PSU you can easily overclock and add 2GB more RAM and still you will be safe.

So save yourself some money just make sure to buy a quality PSU with sufficient amounts of amps on the 12+V rail.An overkill watatge PSU wont give you anything extra.

Cheers.

Like my system uses total at max load 437 watts but I have a 600 watt the thing is you want a bigger psu so it dont has to strain providing power.

Are you forgetting SLI/Crossfire?? What if I for example, have deep pockets and want to spring for a SLI setup, or god forbid--one of those nifty quad-SLI setups in the future? I don't think 500watts would necessarily cut it.......

That's one of the main reasons why I went w/my 750watter.......

Also as the psu ages the compasitors lose there efficienty which you want a bigger psu, For example say your system uses 400 watt max load you get a 450 watt and you leave the pc on 24/7 and had it a year the wattage strain is increased to 20-30% meaning you now maxingthe psu or pushing beyond of what it can handle. A good rule of thumb is if you plan on keep the computer/psu 2 years or more yearsget 100 watt morethan you need.

OMG! I see the light! Lets buya QX6800,2GB RAM,1 HD,DVD Burner,X38 board,X-Fi Xtremegamer and a 8800GT and then...

LETS GET A 350W PSU FOR IT! We still have 33 more watts left and i don't think we're gonna overclock! Thinker_145 IS NOW FTW! LETS ALSO GET SOME RANDOM CRT THAT WAS MADE IN LIKE 1995,ALSO LETS NOT PLAY CRYSIS BECAUSE CURRENT HARDWARE CAN'T MAX IT AT HIGH RESOLUTION!!!!!!!!!!

:o Why do you speak such nonsense?! This PC is too good to be upgraded and thus we can get away with a 350W! :D

As a general rule of thumb, when building a new PC, always get a PSU that is at least 100W more than what is required, in case of future upgrades, or what 04dcarraher mentioned, an increase in wattage strain.

I buy my psu's based on amperage instead of watts. Its just a coincidence that most high amp psu's also have high watts. As for doing it for safety..i pretty much know how much i need. I buy way ahead of my power usage so i dont have to look at the specs on stuff everytime i upgrade to something that uses more power.

At first glance you make a valid argument after all the next video card class up uses more power most of the time. BUT I don't see a video card using 100watts more over the previous class. I think everyone should get a 500 min and 600 if you have the money to blow... But when you see ppl (like my friends) buying 800+...... crazy.

He said ARGUEMENT,which almost always happens when you create a new thread,Discussion and Arguement aren't the same thing you know.

Because the initial spike of power when you first switch the unit on is much larger then what it will use "fully loaded" afterward. 317W of current is only what you're seeing after the voltage regulators have long kicked in and are supplying current. On that initial flip of the switch, they have not had time to address the sudden rush of current to components. And those figures are usually several times larger than what a system may use after it's been on for a while. Not having enough power to adequately feed a system that may demand that much even for a split second is where you can start seeing power-related issues. If you knew anything about electronics and how electricity worked, you'd know that.

exactly what I was thinking, when I get a new GPU and possibly CPU in 2-3 years, I will be glad that I have the 600W PSU, plus I have 5 USB devices always connected, one of which is an external HDD.
