If i saved myself the money and got the e6750 what are the chances id be able to OC to the 6850's stock clock without having to change anything else like cooling etc etc.

The way i understand it is that most of the C2d's are produced on the same line and then branded as different sku's depending on yeild and whatnot.

Assuming thats correct shouldnt i be able to just get a 6750, save the $100 and just clock it to 6850 for free?

Thats correct, moreover, on on stock cooling the E6750 can easily reach 3.2 to 3.4 ghz depending on your specific proc. The E6850 is a waste of money for an extra 300 mhz.

E6750 can EASILY reach at least 3.0GHz so yes a E6850 is a ripoff.

And i havent really oc'd in a while but wouldnt a 6750 running at the same multiplier as the 6850 be faster at the same speed due to the FSB being increased?

I was leaning towards a quad core earlier but i figured as long as an e6750 oc'd a bit will handle crysis well by the time i need a quad id be upgrading again anyway.

I would get a quad but i play alot of semi old stuff that is either single threaded or at most dual threaded. Because of this i would HAVE to oc the quad to at least 3ghz to get the same performance i would get from either of the duals i mentioned.

I dont want to have to buy aftermarket cooling and im not sure i would get a chip capable of hitting 3.0 on the stock air cooler.

Additionally i cant really afford to replace burnt up parts. Any oc'ing i do is gonna have to be WELL within a safe range.

For me to get a quad i would essentially have to be guaranteed 3ghz on the stock cooler without a massive vcore increase or the need for cooling changes.

you can overclock a E6850 to. anyways if you have the money get a E6850 or quad but its not necessary. I dont think there will be a very big difference game wise between the e6750 and the e6850.

Why would you spend the extra money? There won't be any noticeable performance gain.

Get the E6750. I know you said on stock cooling, but if you want a great cooler for only $20, you should look at the Arctic Cooling Freexer 7 Pro for an E6750 or Q6600.
