My old comp....I just let it run.

Now I have a new higher end one that I'm very particular about.

Whats best for these?

Leave them on all day when I'm at work and what not or shut them down when I'm afk for more than a few hours?

Well, look at it this way: leaving it on all day would cause a jump in your electricity bill. Or at least, that's what I saw in mine :P

My PC hasn't been off for more than a year (with the exception of 2 or so seconds for a weekly/biweekly reboot).

I'd suggest if you want to let your computer run all the time then get a very high quality and efficient power supply ;)

You think your computer will last longer by leaving it on all the time?

Mine usually runs for 2-3 months at a time, and I only turn it off/on if I need to update it or if there's a nasty storm.

This was actually what was recommended by computer companies back in the early 90's up to about 2002. The technology today isn't the same. Turning your computer off is the best solution when not using it. The heating cooling theroy isn't as significant as it was 10 years ago. Not to mention the statistics of turning your computer off at night is very significant in your power bill.

I turn it off when I am asleep or when I am not home. Don't know why people wouldn't turn their PC's off, save some electricity

Me neither. I guess it is hard to push a button or click three times for some people.

I turn it off if I'm going somewhere for more than a day. It sleeps whenever I'm not going to be using it in the next ten minutes, as it's a waste of power otherwise.

Some people say your components will last longer if you leave your computer on all the time, some people say they will last longer if you turn your computer off at nights. The truth is, it's six and two threes, so do what you want :D I turn my computer off at night.

Well the heating issue wasn't really the problem with turning them on and off with old PCs. It was the power surge you got due to the power button being connected directly to the power supply. Anyway i turn mine off, it sucks too much juice and it's too noisy to leave on at night.

Putting your computer to sleep will consume less than 5 Watts of use. The initial power draw from constantly turning on and off your computer will use up more electricity than putting it to sleep and awakening it. In either case the difference will likely be less than $3 per month.

I dont recommend leaving it completely on at night, if only because it does significantly decrease the lifespan of the fans in your computer. The rest of your components will be perfectly fine to handle the constant use. Fans even those rated at 150,000 hours, will often suffer at increased impedance due to dust. If your fans die or weaken, you may be looking at permanent damage to components.

I don't know why you would ever turn off your computer when there is a standby option in Windows that uses close to zero power.

I turn it off, no reason to leave it on if I'm not using it. Sleep or hibernate works good as well. My server is left 24/7 on of course. A long with my router which is a computer, has been on for 120 days :D FreeBsd is so stable :D

Mine gives off an eerie blue glow, so I don't really have a choice if I want to get some sleep. I sleep = computer sleeps, only exceptions are downloads and updates.
