Whether you're using a stereo amp that passes through the sub (which has a crossover) then to the speakers, or reciever or something else.
Chances are you can make everything work though.

I'm not very good with technology, but i think i remember my brother having a rectangular metal box, that was probably the amp. Is an amp necessary? What does it do? I jus did a random wikipedial search on amps, and nothing really turns up. Â What about receivers? Â What are those, and are they necesary? Â My sound card is inside my PC, but months ago it was acting weird...Is it possible for me to just plug the speakers in the sound hole that comes with the PC itself, and not the sound card, and make it work?
What kind of bookshelf speakers were you looking at? Some are active, some are passive. Active ones have an amp built into them. If they aren't active, you can buy a Dayton T-Amp for cheap.

I'm willing to spend around $300, but that could change in the future. So you're after 2.1, would you want to upgrade to 5.1 in the future or not? Excuse me for asking, but is 5.1 better than 2.1?

I'll probably stick to 2.1, then. $300 is a difficult budget, if it was $200 I'd say get a nice amplifier and a nice pair of stereo speakers and buy the sub a bit later, but I guess $300 might squeeze in a decent sub too. What happens if my sound card is broken? I think it's broken, it's been acting weird, and i don't know if it stopped working, because my speakers stopped working some time ago, so i can't test the sound card with them. I tried plugging my ipod earbuds into one of the holes in the soundcard, but it doesn't work either. If i were to plug the bookshelf speakers into the hole that comes with the PC, should they work? Â Also, the sound card is placed inside the PC.
As long as you have a soundcard with the relivent outs you can get anything working really. Â

Basically, i have been using cheapo ear buds to listen to stuff on my PC, and they are horrible because they only work well with an ipod. the issue is, i cannot remember whether or not the sound has problems once in the while. I was saying it's possible that the soundcard only works sometimes, but i didn't have speakers to plug into the hole of the soundcard in the back of the PC because my speakers broke. after that, i used cheap headphones plugged into the headphones hole on the front of the PC, until those headphones broke, and i was using the ipod earbuds i just mentioned.

I plugged in the earbuds into the holes in the back of the PC. The green hole on the top works, the green hole on the bottom doesn't (I'm not 100% sure, but i think the bottom green hole is the soundcard). This computer, after a few more months, will have been around 7 years old, if that information is important.

You're fine if you have a PCI lane on your motherboard and shouldn't be hard,just put it in

Front port is working That is the issue atm, i'm not sure if the sound doesn't work like once every 50 uses. I will have to keep testing the sound and see if there is a problem.
