depends on the game....Some require console commands, others are turned on by a setting.

I know FRAPS does.....but I didnt say it, because FRAPS is a big system hog and will lower your framerate considerablly, and wont give you an accurate representation.

ati tray tools has an on screen display that can show this and other stuff.

but that is also a bit of a system drag to use.

It is best to use the proper console command for the game in question, which you can usualy find online... most fps games have this as a hidden feature.

no, not fraps, that costs money. The free version only goes up to 30 FPS.

Try ZD Soft Game Recorder. It has a built in FPS meter

I think that RivaTuner has a service that shows you the fps (RivaTuner Statistics Server), but I don't know how to use it since I usually use in-game commands to display fps.

FRAPS. First of all, the guy who posted above me is wrong, FRAPS only costs money if you want to be able to record your game at 30+ FPS or for longer than 30 seconds (or 20, correct me if I'm wrong). In other words: Freeware if all you want is an FPS detector.

Secondly, FRAPS is not a system hog. It never rises to 1% of my CPU, and never goes above 7 MB of RAM for me (I have the bought version, the free version will most likely be exactly the same). If your computer cannot handle a game with 7 MB of RAM in the background, than you have a problem. If it is too severe, take off some applications, or even explorer.exe, and then bring it back after your game session.

I used the free version for about 6 years, and the bought version for a few months--never had a problem.

I can spare 7mb for sure. Before I start any game I turn off all essential processes. It usually leaves about about 16 processes running with only 120MB of 4096MB (with paging)It dosent sound like FRAPS would ding performance too much.Where can I download a free trial version of it?

True. And even then, FRAPS is better than many other programs.
