I'm building a new computer and planing to buy an Asus Striker 2 Extreme 790i motherboard. I'm a bit new to this but what I want to know is can I use a cheaper DDR2 memory rather than DDR3 Memory?

Not going to happen, they both use different slots, it's like trying to use DDR RAM on a DDR2 board.

actually, it should work ... normally a motherboard that supports DDR3, supports as well DDR2 like the GA-EP45-DS3R for example, that suppports DDR2-1066 and DDR3-1333. Guess it depends on the MB.

That only applies to Hybrid DDR2/DDR3 mobos like Asrock, etc. Not all motherboards are hybrid DDR2/DDR3. If it is, they will specify it. Always check specifications, as it should tell you almost everything about what to expect from the mobo.
