Consoles, are they dead?

Hi, I'm Max,

I've ordered a gaming pc from a company on ebay, the setup is cheaper than buying a console from this generation which leads me to think, are game consoles dead?, to me the PS4 and the XBOX One look ugly in design, the libraries look terrible, I can't find a single game that I want to play, yet on the PC side the choices are basically endless, steam + gog + humble bundle = so much choice, I was just wondering what other's think?

An APU and an integrated gpu? Sorry to be a negative nelly but did you do much research before purchase?

I've two family members with the same pc and from what I've seen they've not had any problems, plus as the auction listing has over 2,000 purchases it give me the impression the setup must be good enough, granted it's not high end by any means but it seems to do the job without any issues.

Edit: Just to follow on from above, for me when playing a game it's the story which is important, not so the graphics, it's like the Wii U, I'd buy a Wii U if Nintendo release the console with a gamepad instead of the tablet-pad, I just don't want to pay for something which I won't use if that makes sence.

I would argue that traditional plug and play consoles are dead, and current consoles are essentially PCs with more limited operating systems.

Paying a little more for a seperate CPU and GPU (around $50 more) can give you a far far better system with the best quad core athlon + GTX750, that will play games like XBOX1.

I sincerely wish they were. We would get the super crazy high budget games we get now? No. Would the gameplay get deeper and more satisfying? Most likely.

I have a gaming PC and a gaming laptop. But, there's still room for consoles. I'm just waiting for the exclusives (that I like) to hit critical mass.

As an aside, how a box (X1 or PS4) is less aesthetically appealing compared to another box (a PC) is a bit mystifying - to be honest most PC cases are rather unattractive, from my perspective. As far as games go - many of the big hitters are on consoles as well. While there are many benefits to PC, my favorite part about PC gaming is playing unique gems from older generations (e.g. Thief, Baldur's Gate, Planescape), retrogaming, more current unique RPG experiences that for various reasons are exclusive to the platform, and strategy games. If you don't care about graphics power, the current consoles are pretty much PCs that lack customizability and backwards compatibility

At this point they might as well be. Wii U is surprisingly the only "current gen" system doing anything worth paying attention to. The other two aren't cutting it at the moment but that will begin to change, certainly this year we're going to get a nice improvement in "current gen" console games.

If they don't improve, I suppose I'll just continue to not support them with the wallet.

Nah, consoles will likely never end up dying out, there's always going to be the need for a system, or systems, that can be operated by those who cant manage to so much as set the clocks on their DVR's.

Totally agree. Not to mention, games aren't unique like console games from 6th generation. Instead it feels like dumb down PC gaming instead of pure console gaming.

They aren't, the ps4 and xbone are selling fairly well (mostly due to the strong start). I'd expect this life cycle to be 6 years or so, and after that I'm not sure what will happen for consoles. The early ideas on the xbone will probably come to fruition though (online only drm etc)

i don't see the point of this thread. you buy a mediocre pc for gaming (in which the story is important to you) then you go and compare it to consoles and conclude that that consoles are dead because you bought a cheaper pc.

it would be like saying i bought a paperback book for $10 and it's better than reading books on an ipad because i read for the stories and the paperback is cheaper.

if you don't like console games then why would price be a factor, anyway? if you wanted to play dota, why would you compare the price to a console? you could play dota on a $500 machine or a $5000 machine, but even if the consoles were free it wouldn't make any impact on your decision because there's no dota on consoles.

Wii U has: Smash 4(been playing that a lot), SM3DW, pikmin 3, Bayonetta 2, WW HD.

3ds has too many great games to really mention.

Those games I mentioned don't even get cheaper, because good games don't go on sale.

If you mean compared to xb1/ps4, then yeah there is no point to buying those potatoes with no games.

Definantly not. Consoles will still be alive as long as kids and some adults keep playing on them and believing that they are the better system/

Give me a break. You bought a shitty PC and now consoles are dead? People playing Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Halo MC Collection, The Last of Us, Forza games, and a bunch of other games that sold over the holidays are going to be very upset to hear about this new development.

They are dead to me. I thought about getting the ps4 or maybe the catbox one but after looking at the games...I see no reason.
