Silicon Knights boss Denis Dyack has said that cloud gaming – services that offer online games to players without the need for specialist hardware in a home – could be the ideal business model for developers, publishers and consumers.

Speaking in an exclusive interview published today, Dyack said that the cloud could be the solution to all the major problems harming the growth of the games business today, such as piracy and used game sales, and at the same time attract new consumers previously intimidated by the complexity of choice in the market.GamesIndustry

Dennis Dyack is a great guy, which is why I never understood why people will hammer him. Very interesting points.

Step 1: Create a cloud gaming network Step 2: Convince major game publishers to license their games to you Step 3:Garner small following of subscribers using limited game selection and cheap prices Step 4: Expand game library and subscription base until you have market control Step 5: Institute pay-as-you-play prices Step 6: Burn in hell for Step 5

As long as I can pay a good gaming ring cloud gaming will never reach the standards of quality that traditional gaming can provide.

Also, some crapy companies are running in the opposing direction: instead of building a impressive farm of dedicated servers to support the data transfer of his multiplayer titles -which is what Blizzard does with WoW- they are totally disabling the use of dedicated servers. If they don't want to pay servers for the transfer of minimal data -the players possitions and actions-. how they can afford to pay the cost of 720p rrealp time videogaming in stream? I must add that there's not technology available to provide the promised quality that Onlive and another ones are talking about, so in the next 10 years their promises are basically vaporware.

I, for one, am overly excited for cloud gaming. I even signed up to the Gaikai beta today and hope to get an invitation.

If this succeeds, gaming is officially over.

The problem with cloud computing, is when the server crashes. If Microsoft couldn't make a system bulletproof for storing something as simple as phone data, well........I don't know what companies think they can do with video games.

Wasn't the same said about motion controls? Every time a big change comes along, it's the end of gaming.

I'll believe this when I see it. There's too many technological road blocks with our current internet technology for this to be feasible.

Pay as you play, there is absolutely nothing "win" about that. I refer you to my cable TV bill and how my cable company bends me over and has its way with me. How many of us buy PPV movies on a regular basis?

Don't be worried, Youtube with the help of no-limit server farms from Google is unable to provide smoothy video streaming of bad resolution, low bit rated prerecorded stuff, the chances of a good experience in gaming with CC are 0.

I think this was posted a while back (video of CC) and it was revealed that the servers were about a few rooms away or something, obviously dedicated with no load on them, and the graphics still look pretty bad (and choppy on the racing game). And I assume that my singleplayer games will be lagging? Ugh.

No, it was a while back, but I think it's fair to say that their servers are currently not fully loaded (if at all), and the servers are not on the other side of the Earth for the purpose of the demo, and that it does look pretty choppy and low-quality. How many people would be willing to give up their 19x10 res and DX11 effects for cloud computing?

Since you are so vehemently opposed to the concept, why not sign up to the Gaikai beta yourself and hope to receive an invitation so that you can check out the service yourself? I recommend that anyone else, may they be for or against the idea, sign up as well to dispel or confirm their thoughts about the service.

Maybe I will. I don't know if I'm interested enough to try it though. So how about upgrading hardware? I assume once they have their massive server farms set up, they won't be upgrading any time soon for the newest graphics cards, since it would be a monumental task to keep the hardware of entire server farms up to date. Would it essentially become the PC version of the consoles, where you get an upgrade every 6 years or so?

You bring forth a valid question. One I don't like but, nevertheless, valid. :(

Cloud computing is about the worst idea imaginable. No physical media, you can't mod your game to your liking, your ability to play your games are completely dependent on outside forces you have zero control over (ex: both your and their internet connections, their servers, their ability to stay in business), no need for gaming hardware which is part of the fun of PC gaming, etc. Hell to the no way would I buy any game from a cloud gaming service. Its only use to me would be to rent a PC game which is something you can't do right now.
