I'm not sure but it ran fine on my 9600. I suppose it also depends on your other specs.

It runs find at medium settings with shaders off but if you feel confident then overclock the card to get a few more fps.
Also you will get a bit of slowdown when the you blow stuff up.
Still looks amazing even at medium.

Yes, however dont expect amazing details. It should still run fine under the DirectX 9 option (which it was made for). But if the performance is unacceptable and you just want to play the game (without caring too much for the graphics) then you can tell the game to run under DirectX 8 or even DirectX 7. Either way your card should definately run the game, if not in DX9 then definately in the older DX (but at a somewhat serious loss of graphical detail). Gamespot has an article comparing the DX modes in Half Life 2, so go to the Half Life 2 PC page here on Gamespot, it should be under features.

With that chipset, the game would be running with minimal or no shaders, so it might have ran well but it wouldn't have looked even close to how good it can.

It will run, but it won't be as pretty as it should be.  The HL and Unreal series are extremely scalable in terms of hardware.

If my old Geforce 440 could run it, I'm sure yours can too.

First off, half-life 2 can't run in direct x 9 with a fx 5200. I have the card, and it limits you to direct x 8 graphics. Though, actually it plays the game just fine. Leave the resolution at 800x600, have everything on medium, and you'll be fine. Now I don't know about half life episode 2 though. Valve has said already they're putting more graphical effects into it so you may have to lower your settings or upgrade to play it.
