I recently purchased a LG BD550 blu-ray player. It's great and all but I have one problem. Whenever I play blu-ray movies, I can't seem to figure out how to fill the entire screen. I have a 1080p tv. In the settings menu for the blu-ray, I set the aspect ratio to 16:9 and resolution 1080p. And yes, I'm using a HDMI connection.

The only way I can fill the entire screen with the picture is manually zooming in. It works, but I have to do this every single time when I'm playing a movie. So far, I tried the Dark Knight and Transfomers. Is this normal? Do I have to keep manually zooming in to fill the screen or am I missing something? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Over a decade of dvd and this question is still asked. Just because it is in HD does not mean the black bars go away.

Funny though -

Back when 16:9 sets first came on the market, the big selling point was - "Now you won't have to put up with the black bars anymore"

Looks like everyone forgot about that little lie.

Great article, clearly explains the whole idea behind the aspect ratios. I also get them on few movies in my HDTV, I found a solution for it. I copy all my blu ray collection into a media server and encode it in h264 to preserve the quality. The good thing is when the file is being played on the HDTV, i can resize the picture and make it strech in the entire screen..while this removes the top&bottom bars...it also makes characters appear taller and thinner..so pretty much there is no "real" solution..either watch real aspect ratio with black bars or distort the picture to make it fill the screen...
