Whats the best cpu to have for gaming as of now. Best price would be good too, looking to get something that'll last for a good period of time.

Is it still the i5 4670k?

For the price the 4670 has the best price to performance ratio.

The new broadwell should be out, but the jump from the 4670 shouldn't be big.

i don't think any new intel cpu will anything significantly different. 5% faster maybe? AMD has nothing, so Intel doesn't even have to try and they can still outsell them with anything they have.

I've got two pcs still, 2600k, and 4770k. The 4770k is at best 10% faster in some circumstances, and sometimes less then 5% faster. When doing video encoding I usually use my 2600k since its just as fast as my 4770k. Which is pretty impressive since the 2600k is a cpu i bought in Jan 2011 and its still as good many cpus out there.

So if i had to pick whats the best cpu and probably the best lasting likely it would be the 4770k, its fast and cheap considering its capabilities. Anything more powerful goes from 350 bucks to over 600 bucks and may actually be slower for single threaded apps.

But from what I understand, Haswell E won't be out until around October or November and DDR4 memory is going to be mighty expensive when it first hits the market. First adopters always pay more, but those who pick up old technologies when new technologies come out (almost) always pay less.

So if you want the best deal and you can wait, you will buy a Haswell refresh (4790, or 4790k if you want to overclock) right after Haswell E is released.

I am still sitting on an i7-950 contemplating whether or not I should wait.

I guess the 4770K. Nothing really jumps off the page in the CPU space anymore.... (that isnt CRAZY overpriced)

Doubtful. Haswell refresh is being released these days.

Broadwell wont be out for a year at least. The 4670k is the best value as far as chips go.

Your SO must be happy for all the money you save on hardware updates since CPU/GPU departments are progressing so slowly these days :P

@horgen: I planned on my 3770K lasting me 3 years. I've had it nearly 2, I'm sure it would last another 2-3 years. I tend to upgrade when I have cash. I "don't" need to upgrade but I like it.

Every year I get the itch to upgrade my i7-950. Then I start looking at performance benchmarks and think about the monumental pain in the keister it is to swap out a motherboard, reinstall Windows, and everything that entails. Then I sink back into my chair and let out a forlorn sigh.

It wouldn't be so bad if the only pain of upgrading was shelling out the money.

You should go for 4670K or 4770K. Both are great CPUs in their price range.

As will I, provided intel doesn't want 1000$ for it.

Difference between gen to gen isn't big, also don't upgrade CPU until you actually need it.

Well that's enough for Wolfenstein :P

Anyway your CPU is OC pretty well which is far enough for anything, until you see actual game benchmarks that say that your CPU is a bottleneck don't upgrade, there's new hardware every year.

The prices stay but the hardware change and improve a bit every year.

@airshocker: Really? I must of missed that.

I can see them taking their time with it, it's not like they have any competition.

@klunt_bumskrint: Just saw it last night while I was deciding on if I want to upgrade my 2500k now or wait until Broadwell. I agree though, they have no competition so I don't see why they wouldn't take their time.

So basically the CPU I have is not worth upgrading? Or would the jump make a solid difference in current games?

The only solid difference is the GPU, it's the main power of increase fps.

BTW what's your GPU?

FX 8320 if you're on a budget.

i5 4670k if you got the money.

i7 4770k if you want the 30% performance increase from hyper threading and applications that utilize it.

Is it HT itself that creates the performance boost, or the increased cache?

Probably both. Really depends how you're utilizing it. Too many factors so it's just a rough estimate.
