I am thinking whether now would be the right time to get BC 2 on my PC for multiplayer. So, is the online playerbase still going strong or is it beginning to dwindle and stuff?
Its very strong. You never struggle to find a game. But only get if you have the hours to play it frequently because you level up very slowly at first and if you haven't played a BF game before then you will have to endure a steep learning curve.
I say definitely yes get it, much improved from launch, singleplayer is quite decent also and multiplayer is an absolute blast and there are many people playing. Only downside for me is lack of communication.

Seeing as I have not seen one complaint about the game in the last few weeks, you can assume that the community is too busy playing to actually give a care about Forums.
The game is nice if/when it works properly. Lots of people get flickering black screens, random disconnects, friends list hasn't worked since last patch, knife is bugged, Q button spotting is bugged, guns unbalanced, rocket spamming, machine gun medics mowing/sniping people down, shotguns able to snipe too... there's 50+ known bugs and FPS issues. It all depends on what you have in your PC and even then it's pot luck! As I said though, the game is quite nice when you have a good team to work with. Patch has been delayed for 3 weeks now... no news at all from EA/Dice.

1024x768, no, more like 1680x1050 :P.
Yes it'll be just fine, maxed out with AF and some AA on singleplayer but for extreme performance and multiplayer, pretty much everything maxed out except shadows on low with some AF and 2xAA or 4x, if you play as a sniper if not and you really want to have a constant 70-75+ fps then disable AA.

How on Earth could it be dwindling already? No it is not, and will not be until Battlefield 3 comes out. Just look at BF 1942, BF2, and BF 2142... All are still very populated. Remeber, this is the PC we're talking about, not consoles. Our communities stick with things much more.
