In the graphics card rankings on this forum, it says the 1GB 4890 is at #9 and the 1GB 5770 is at #18, but I was looking at the specs of the 2 cards and as far as I can tell, the 5770 is the stronger card and has DX11 support. The only thing better about the 4890 was that it's 256 bit while the 5770 is 128 bit. Does that make a huge difference in game performance? Should I go with the 5770 or the 4890?

The 4890 will give you a better framerate (not massively), but if you ask anyone here, they'll recommend a 5770 (I'm neutral on this) because its more 'future proof' with dx11 support and some other features. Expect to hear a lot of "get the 5770" which is probably the right thing to do.

the 4890 is better, but the 5770 has DX11. If you think the DX11 support is important, get the 5770; and if not, get the 4890.

Really, I think only Dirt 2 (coming out in 2 days) is the only game with DX11 for now. By the time you need DX11, DX11.1 will come out.

The decreased memory width definitely limits the 5770's performance, but not substantially compared to the 4890. I would actually hold off on getting a new video card ATM, at least until prices drop and more DX11 titles are released. If you're pressed to get a new card now, though, I would go with the 5770.

Also the 4890 is a lot less power efficient, so costs you electricity mate! Might require a larger PSU. Someone else from some forum said this: "5770 is better. Drivers will improve, uses less power, lower temperature, etc.. It's just a better buy in every possible way =/ "

Look for benchmarks and get which ever card does better. Future proof doesn't mean anything right now because the games that will do a good job of utilizing DX11 are going to require a better card than the 5770 to make it run smoothly on good settings. So get the more powerful one.

5770 has already received a performance boost from the new 9.12 catalyst drivers. 5770 is catching up quick to the 4890 and GTX275 and after it gets a few more driver updates the 5770 will probably beat the 4890 and GTX275. The 5770 simply uses better and newer technology which enables it to run cooler, quieter, and use less power than the 4890 and GTX275. The 5770 also has DirectX 11 support. The 5770 is better in so many ways.

That's only one set of benchmarks for one particular game, hardly of any value. And anyways, would most users really even notice a difference in real world gameplay between a 5770, 4890, and GTX275? Probably not. But they would definitely notice a difference in noise and system temperature. Sure you can put a bunch of fans in your case, but again you are dealing with noise. Is that really worth it to get 3 frames-per-second more in a game? Not to me it's not. I would rather have a quiet, cool, and power efficient system. But to each his own I guess.

Actually I've heard of DX11 games running ok on it because it runs the code more efficiently (someting like that). Its not like DX10 was from DX9

Why? with catalyst 9.12 and overclocking a little, its not even that much better... To the OP what resolution u play at? that should be a factor.

They said that about Direct X 10. That it would run more efficiently. I remember seeing charts (I wish I could still find them) that illustrated the paths that were cut to increase performance from DX9 to DX10. Obviously, the ambitious propaganda didn't fare so well. I wouldn't buy into that $#!%, not until real world demonstrations are available.

Oh... I'm drooling over that game. I can't wait. I, however, refuse to give up XP so I'll be playing it in DX9.

there is performance hit but it isnt drastic only like 10 - 15% from DX9 - DX11 in Dirt 2 and this was all on early drivers still, there is room to improve.

Lets hope they improve. 10%-15% is enough of a hit to make me stay with DX9. I can sacrefice shiney water for fluid gameplay.

Has intel abandoned 1156? I mean I know everyone says never get em but I havnt seen any intel roadmaps saying its no longer part of their equation...i figured theyd keep low - mid processors on it.

no; but the socket has very few PCI Express lanes and even fewer if you wanna use SATA III. In the future this will be important. Not so much right now unless you have a strong dual-gpu video card or are using SLI or Crossfire.

Buying a good power supply, or power supplies, is another good example of future proofing. My 2x 550w PSU's have been in several of my gaming pc's already, and they'll likely be in a few more. 1100w total is more than enough for the foreseeable future...

5770. They run cooler and they scale very well in crossfirex. And it probably costs less than 4890 also.

The concept of preparedness I have no problem with. The term "future proof" literally makes no flipping sense at all. It is misleading. Really, think about it. All of you that use that term sound like idiots. You sound like the same people that get fear mongered into being afraid of socialism when you don't even know what socialism is. That is the best example I can think. "Future proof" is not an intuitive term, you've all leeched it off of each other. One moron used it and others thought it sounded cool and "to the point" well it sounds like retardation to me as well as other respectable forum members.

While I agree, someone is grumpy.

Or like the anti 5770 bandwagon hoppers, like drivers dont mature or something.
