I really liked it. You can customize your ships to a point (with weapons/shields/engines and such). You can play as a freelancer and take on odd jobs (hunt down pirates and such) or you can be a trader (take loads of good from one galaxy to another to resell for a good profit).
I do believe that there are folks that still play online, though I never really bothered with it....wasn't really my thing playing online.
