Why not get a Q6600,,,they are cheap and offer better price/performance than the Phenom! Also they overclock further.

The Core 2 Dou's are tried and true, and the overclocking community went nuts over them (me included) because they can achieve rediculously high speeds with little tweaking/stress. My E6750 can hit 3.2 at stock voltage (stock speed 2.66ghz at 1.35) and with a slight bump in the voltage (1.4) I can hit 3.6ghz completely stable. Also consider this - after all these years we are NOW just seeing games that are optimized for multithreading and dualcores. There are only a few games out there that are optimized for quadcores (Lost Planet, Kane and Lynch, a few of the source engine based titles), so quads don't always outperform in gaming. A C2D with a nice HIGH FSB is best at the moment versus something like a Q6600 which is rated at FSB speeds of 1066. But to retract quadcores do dominate in terms of applications - photoshop, pro tools, avid, etc...).

Only a few current games currently support Quad core, so at the moment you are better going for a C2D with a high clock speed which was massive overclocking capability. I can take my E8400 from 3.0 stock to about 4.1 with only a minor voltage increase.
