Team Fortress 2 and Bad Company 2 are the two best, cheap multiplayer shooters you can find.
Counter Strike Source is another option, but I consider the franchise to be one of the most overrated in all of PC gaming and the "skill ceiling" is incredibly high. If you play Counter Strike 1.6 or Source, you'd better bring your "A" game every time unless you want to be killed constantly before scoring any kills yourself.
Try team fortress 2, Bad Company 2, or Modern Warfare 2. Personally I wouldn't recommend CS. All people playing have been playing it for years and there are only 2 maps people play (assault and dust).
Counter Strike, Bad Company 2, TF2, Counter Strike Source, Left 4 Dead, Day of Defeat: Source, or any of the source mods like Insurgency or something like that. There's loads out there, most of it available for a very fair price from Steam.
I'd go for BF2. The best in the series, still TONS of people who play it, same with BF2 mods. It's insane that there are so many servers for Project Reality.
