I was playing crysis 2 today when my computer suddenly restarted, the profromance was fine right up to the restart. I checked my bios and my idoling temp for my cpu was 45 degrees, Not outragious but enough to cause concern,

I took off my fan and reset it with a tiny bit more thermal compound, Its silver compound and a thermal electric fan from chill tech.

Went back to my bios and the temp was at a normal 19 degrees and the fan display said 18 so i figured problem solved. When im in windows my temp alarm is going off 2 minutes after start up and then the temp alarm on my fans display starts going off and the heatsinc is hot to the touch.

I underclocked the cpu slightly and same thing happens.

Im thinking about sending the cpu back, but i think OC voids the warentee...

I have built 3 computers before and have never had this happen before, I dont know what to do now...

Any sugestions? Did i just blow almost 1000 bucks?

Re-seat the cooler again, make sure you have cleaned in correctly before you put on any new therm. paste. BTW, how are they suppose to know if you OC'ed? (They don't, and this is a Xtreme CPU, I'm quite sure they are alowed to change the multipier without braking the warrant.)

I cleaned off all the compound and re applyed, made sure the screws where all down tight in order, and now I am running, but it is much hotter then my norms, but with in acceptable limits,

40-45 idle. 50-75 at 100% for 2 minutes,

no more alarms going off, but my fan controler now reports a much lower temp then windows and my bios, I dont know what one to trust so ill stick with the highest to be safe.

Well, if you're in the Northern Hemisphere, your CPU is getting hotter because its Summer. You never mentioned what type of Heatsink or Thermal Compound you're using. I recommend IC Diamond7 and this website for heatsinks. The Noctua D14, Megahalems, or the Corsair H70 are all phenomenal heatsinks/self-contained water coolers (Corsair H70).

Thats a little odd. :? His/hers alias is however "mariomusicmaker" could mean he need the CPU for other more demanding tasks than gaming. (music making can make use of a good CPU.) But if you can afford the 990X you do afford a HD69xx/gtx5xx card too?

as long as all he plays is COD4..........and TF2........

just as a point of reference, here in australia during summer our 920 was idling at under 20c and in game was around 45c with only a stock fan and heatsink combo.

threads like these make me a happy panda that i paid the place i bought the parts from to put the PC together (only $79AU for an install without the OS, small $$'s to be able to blame someone else in cases like this)

No one is being skeptical when what you said in your other thread could be realized as completely untrue.. a 9800gtx+ which is a slightly lower speed gts 250 would not be running at 120 FPS on MAX settings at 1080p on many many many games. You would still get good performance but no way that good.

On the games i listed it dose, Witcher 2 is the first game i have had in a long time that I cant max at a very high frame rate,

"Even on my 52 inch monitor every thing is silky smooth at 120 fps on every game almost all the time."

That statement is drastically different then you now saying "on the games I listed it does".

While you may have annotated 3 games out (wow, bulletstorm, crysis 2) you then came right back with that LOL statement. That was the problem. From then on you tried to push that a 9800 gtx+ does give such speeds which is incorrect. Maybe you didn't mean to come out saying almost every game will give 120 fps on max settings with a 9800 gtx+ at 1080p but thats what was written. Its just a completly false statement.

So now you are acknowledging that every game will not run 120fps. As others have pointed out, even one of the 3 games you pointed out, crysis 2, will not run at 120 fps maxxed out, especially with the rest of the graphical features released. It will be hard for anyone to attempt you help you out when you have already made false claims in the forum and sole intent earlier was to start some argument with your earlier thread.

We could start playing statistic games on crysis 2 from around the web and you will find your card is not even close to playing at 120fps at 1080p

I never said i could run other games mentioned in that thread by other people at that because i have no idea how they run, I dont play them, I LISTED GAMES. THOSE GAMES I.E EVERY GAME I HAVE RUNS AROUND 120 MAX SETTINGS. THEN I ADDED WITCHER 2 AND IT RUNS AROUND 50-60 FPS,

IS IT THAT HARD TO GRASP?

When you allude 120 fps on EVERY game" you will get such a response. I am not telling you that all the games people listed you couldn't run, just that you alluded you could... Again though, even of the games you listed, its completely wrong. When nvidia even does a chart showing the top cards not reaching your numbers... people will call you out. 120 fps on crysis 2 maxxed out at 1080P on a 9800 gtx+.. 100% not possible. Thats 3-5X more fps then anyone online is claiming to have in your cards performance. I'm done, I'll just let this end the discussion

i thought i read somewhere that an overclocked i7 2600k gets similar performance to a 9xx intel cpu? (aka intel's $1000 dollar CPU)

If its just for audio you dont need that powerful of a CPU honestly. its just audio its not like your rendering out 3D.

Ever try running 10+ additive synths and 128 samples and 30+ effects with less then 10 ms of latency? ever try doing half that and not having every thing turn into a clipping mess?

ever try encodeing and rendering a 10 minute long wav at 32 bits?

The amount of math involved in the effects and synths is staggering. This is the first cpu i have had that allows me to play live layers with almost no latency, pre rendering and playing back samples stifles creativity and work flow so much... now i can record the midi and have every thing running live, go record some more midi,

Its needed.

Well, considering the 990X came out a month after the 2600K, that would be a bit... difficult.

I dont need a super high end graphics card, The main purpose of this pc is my digital audio workstation, thus the beefy CPU.

And I dont get why you people are skepticle about that. sereously, are you mad that you overpaied for your cards even though i get great proformance out of my 250$ card?? grow up guys,,,,

Wait you paid 250$ for a 9800GTX... I bought a GTX 560Ti which is way better than the 9800GTX for lower than that... boy did you get scammed.

Also, just my opinion, I don't know if anyone else agrees, but with your attitude, I don't see you getting popular with your music.

Dude, the 9800GTX came out years before the 560 Ti. I payed $350 AUD for my 8800GT and $300 AUD for my 460, which is about twice as fast.

im thinking if he is thinking that a 990x came out after the 2600k then maby he is thinking he should have been able to get a newer video card for the same price. OR get the 9800GTX+ for like 80 bucks (its real worth right now LOL)

The fact that you are judging his life by his online personality is funny.

I dont need a super high end graphics card, The main purpose of this pc is my digital audio workstation, thus the beefy CPU.

Seriously guys, leave the other thread in the other thread. This thread is about CPU temps, not graphics cards. If you want to argue, use that thread.
