time to gather around the glass folks like parents seeing their newborn in the incubation cribs.

here is the completely reworked 7850 err i mean r2-270

AMD-R7-260-Curacao-Pro-GPU-635x423.jpg

the cooler is completely reworked, the pcb shrung, the memory controller has been swapped out for a better one and the powersupply requirements have been dramatically reduced thats to some alterations in some other areas making it more power efficient.

http://wccftech.com/amd-curacao-pro-volcanic-islands-graphics-card-pictured-totally-cooler-design/

and here is the big guy the r-290X in a generic testbed cooler that i suspect is only a temporary fixing.

http://wccftech.com/rumor-amd-hawaii-gpu-r9-290x-volcanic-islands-pcb-leaked-512bit-interface-massive-die-size/

the gpu requires one 6 and one 8-pin connector as we can see

Hawaii-GPU-635x472.jpg

also we have someone who supposedly has benchmarked the r2-290X and ehre is what i can summaries: the titan still holds sway when you turn the AA off. but when on AMD is superior to titan.

It is a Pitcairn replacement, Curacao, not Pitcairn itself. Doubt they will reuse 7950 since Curacao XT should be able to perform close to a 7950.

im certain their will eventually be a design for this. they have completely reworked their cooling and powercolors and other makers of cards have really been pushing for new fan designs out of the gate.

mem bandwidth is 512mb

The interface is 512b, the bandwidth will depend on final clocks.
The ES supposedly was running the GDDR5 @ ~4.5ghz but I expect retail to be somewhere within 4.8-5.5ghz, so +300GB/s.

Thats a decent improvement if I choose to upgrade from my current gtx 680. Edit: Not so much from the 7970 and 780/Titan...

Wonder how the r 260/270 are going to compete with a $200 7950boost (thats going to be interesting since the 7000 series has dropped a ton in price).

The 290X looks good but I have a feeling due to the fact that where late into the 28nm cycle/games are still months away from utilizing next gen engines, most people will just wait for 20nm

It was months ago when I posted a plausible rumor specs and said the "8970" will be cheaper than a 780 and faster than Titan. Looks like I am on track to be correct.

You should have seen all the opposition to such rumors from NVIDIA fanboys. Especially Titan owners. I go for what's best for my wallet and performance at the same time.

Majority of the NVidia fanboys on this forum argued points that there probably still correct on (to be fair)

They argued that 1. It wasn't going to be 20nm, 2. The high end volcanic island wasn't going to blow the titan out of the water which was the intial rumor (blow out of the water, NOT beat/equal) and 3. It was going to be able to compete Maxwell

To be honest most of them where right. Its not 20nm, I doubt its going to blow the Titan out of the water (it will equal/beat it but I doubt it will blow it out of the water which was claimed) and theres no way its going to compete with Maxwell given the rumored specs (theres either going to be a 20nm VI series or Pirate islands will come out later next year). There may be one or two users on this board that argued other points that they where wrong on (due to butthurt or fanboyism) but majority of users who argued the VI series where spot on

I'm an AMD card user and I even I admit that the nvidia fanboys weren't as bad as your making it seem.

Alot of people (including nvidia card users) agreed that the highend VI could potentially beat a Titan at a cheaper price (hell a decently overclocked 7970ghz isn't that far off from a 780/titan, let alone a card 1.5 years newer with more cores and better architecture......).

actually, not one nvidia fanboy said it would be possible for it to beat the titan and cost much less at the same time.  Either way, i also predicted that the high end card will be close to half the price of the titan and will demolish it performance wise at the same time.  Im still sticking to that claim.  The titans specs aren't that impressive for the price, its like nvidia is just milking their early adopters as much as possible.  AMD are the ones pushing the hardware nowadays, more horsepower per square inch of silicone.

I guess it depends on what your definition of fanboy is. Up untill august most people thought it was going to be 20nm (which even nvidia owners would tell you would mean it would beat the Titan easily). By the time it was confimed to be 28nm, there where alot of rumored specs showing that it could match/beat the Titan so there wasn't really a large time gap for crazy predictions (there might of been a couple butthurt fanboys but most people, even nvidia card owners believed the highend VI would be a contender for the 780/titan).

If true, looks good.  I'm still happy with my recent purchase of a 7970 ghz though.  When I actually do need an upgrade in horsepower (I got the 7970 for memory purposes more than anything), whatever AMD/nvidia come out after this new set will surely be a beast

What do you guys think will be the price of the fastest single GPU card in the Hawaii lineup? The most I'm willing to spend is $400 (before taxes), and if it's not significantly faster than the HD 7970, I'll just get that for $300 (before taxes).

Most rumors are pointing at $550-600. If you can only afford the 7970 then that's still an amazing choice (some of the models have been on sale recently for $270/280 after rebate and its a very fast card). Not only that but it overclocks pretty well too if your into that

Damn, that's disappointing. Will the second fastest single GPU card in the Hawaii lineup be faster than the HD 7970? If not, which card will and how much do you think it'll cost? Also, do you think the price of the cards in the 7000 series will drop when the Hawaii lineup is released?

From what Ive read the new card is 20-30% faster then the 7970ghz which puts in the GTX 780/titan area. Your $500+ you be better off with 7950/7970 then adding another shortly later.

its going to be a monster of a card, and will likely be $650-$700.  No way you're going to get a flag ship card day 1 for $300 lol....maybe you will hit that price an year from now.  No need to buy a ghz edition unless its close to the regular version in price, but you should just wait anyway for the new series to release.

If you live in the US then I would avoid the XFX standard edition. The Asus 7970, gigabyte 7970 (windforce), and sapphire 7970 boost (dual X) are all under $300 with rebate so get one of those (theres no way the XFX is signficantly cheaper than those models)

What:s wrong with the one I chose? I want it because XFX has a lifetime warranty, their rendition of the card is more aesthetic, and I currently have an XFX card.

XFX is one of the worst. And they definitely don't have lifetime warranties. Not in Europe at least.

They also have notoriously bad customer support.

My 5870 died a year after I bought it and they wouldn't replace it. *shrug*

Though I wouldn't get the XFX due to the cooler, anyway. It's much worse than some of the other coolers.

My 5870 died a year after I bought it and they wouldn't replace it. *shrug*

Though I wouldn't get the XFX due to the cooler, anyway. It's much worse than some of the other coolers.

"Though as of Jan. 30 2012, XFX will be dropping this lifetime warranty and replacing it with a 2-year limited warranty"

Damn, I guess I was one of the lucky ones. I'll get another brand, as you and others are suggesting.

Yep, a few companies used to offer lifetime warranty, but they all stopped :(

Sapphire, Gigabyte, MSI and ASUS are all solid.

Yeah XFX is awful. I signed my 5970 up for their lifetime warranty only to find out last year that their system had been wiped and all old warranties were gone. I didn't know they have since reduced the warranties to only 2 years. There's also an annyoing problem with the xfx brand 5970 that causes the fan to go up to 100% everytime I start my pc up. Nothing fixes it.

[QUOTE="04dcarraher"][QUOTE="BluRayHiDef"] Yea, I'm leaning toward a 7970 at this point. Is the GHz addition worth the extra cash? Also, will my rig bottleneck an HD 7970?

BluRayHiDef

Nor system while handle 7970 just fine.

I'm dying to order it right now; I want the XFX 7970 (standard edition). However, I'll wait to see if there's a card in the Hawaii lineup that's faster but costs no more than $400.00.

The Gigabyte 7970 is overclocked to 1GHz and has a huge cooler. Plus, it's only $280 right now...

I think you mean $280. Anyhow, is its PCB exposed/ is there a backplate?

lol, yeah.. $280. Sorry for the typo. As for a backplate, I'm not sure if they make on or not. I know that Gigabyte is known to use custom PCB's, so probably not. I don't use them anyway, though. I prefer to let the card breathe. The back of the PCB can put off quite a bit of heat...

It's a four year old card and the only aftermarket air cooler was disconitued long ago because it bent the PCB.

You can always remove the plastic cover and install a couple of nice 92mm fans on the heatsink. I've done that before, and it works quite well...

The last time that I bought an XFX card, the capacitors busted open after about 2 years. I'm guessing that they took a huge hit from the double lifetime warranty, and quality suffered as a result. But, that being said, I haven't bought an XFX card in several years, so hopefully the quality is back up to par...

yeah XFX offered some incredibly stupid warranties...I mean its practically suicide to offer something like that. You will get people who will purposely break a piece of an old video card and send it in. XFX will send back a newer video card and you can keep repeating the cycle again and again.
