Well, here we are with another 4 games, all amazing in their own way.

As usual please use Option 5 if you haven't played at least 3 of these extensively.

The Gameplay vids look much better in 480p, I suggest using that or higher if you watch them.

Anyway, here's the contestants' gameplay vids, vote on!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Starcraft Gameplay sample - Terran Mission 8

Thief: The Dark Project Gameplay sample - The Mage Towers

Unreal Gameplay sample - nice first portion walkthrough(outside graphics were amazing! First battle with Skaarj was my scariest moment in gaming, love this music!)

Worms 2 Gameplay sample - Worms 2 battle

I have to say Starcraft. I bought the game three times because the first two were swiped by my relatives. Thief took a little bit of getting used to. But it was fun. That's why whenever I employ stealth in Crysis, I hark back to Thief. Thief is where I got my start sneaking around. Unreal was the graphics queen of the time. My jaw just dropped when I first saw that flyby.

I think we all know the answer..... Even if Thief and Unreal were exceptionally good compared to today's standards, how can anything beat Starcraft?

wow, I just watched the Unreal vid in entirety, I want to play it again!

Hopefully if I got it from Steam it would be playable on Vista. Had trouble with my original copy, but man did this game look amazing with a 3dfx card!

I've always said, Unreal's graphics or better are acceptable enough graphics to me, even now.

I had forgotten what an awesome soundtrack it had as well.

No love for Thief? Playing Assassins Creed at the moment only justifies to me how great Thief is, with eerily similar concepts.

Thief is a linear stealth fps, assasin creed is an 3rd person sandbox game with combat that requires to press the right button at the right time, and very cheap stealth elements. Propably the worst i have seen. Its not even right to compare them.

Thief easily gets my vote there. Starcraft may have been highly polished, but Thief was unique at the time, and hasn't been topped since (except by its sequel).

Thief is not entirely linear. The jobs themselves - most of them - are like a sandbox in that you can explore any area of the castle that you want really. As crappy as the stealth mechanics, AI etc are in AC1, its still worth comparing them to Thief. It takes a lot of inspiration from that game, but it is sad to see that a game from 98 completely outshines it in the same fields. I hate the way that AC1 holds your through everything. So when you hide it tells you when its safe to come out. You have those colour indicators for the guards. Who was that game made for?! Uwe Boll?!

It's not the love for Thief that's lacking.

It's just that StarCraft is something otherworldly.

starcraft still gets shelf space at most stores that carry pc games, nothing else from 1998 can claim this.

Obviously starcraft, thief is also a very good game, unreal single player failed pretty much imo and worm is just good fun for a hour or 2. I can't seem to get why people like assasins creed? Your doing the same thing over and over again, get in city, talk to contact, climb in tower, kill target in every level. That has nothing to do with thief.

Starcraft. I remember playing SC for the first time, it was glorious. And now I still play, though I'm playing more the SC2 beta, which is even better.

Sure looking that way......Fallout 2 would be the 3rd contestant.

The 4th contestant will be one of the games that places second in the 3 Polls, I'll determine that at some point. Baldur's Gate and Grim Fandango placed 2nd in the first 2 Polls.

Right now we have a tie for 2nd in this Poll.

I'm not a big fan of starcraft, but even I can't deny that when it came out, it was arguably the greatest RTS game ever made.

Need For Speed 3: Hot Pursuit.

Edit: Because I didn't play any of those in the poll and because I have yet to see a racing game there lol.

Well i put it this way: Mission: kill those guards on the rooftops, the ai keeps on getting alerted, what the hell am i doing wrong? You got to throw knives and not get behind them. Its not that it has crappy stealth mechanics or that it hold your hand, its that its made in a weak way.

Thief is responsible for making me such an avid pc gamer. So I guess you could say Thief changed my life. And if you do see Starcraft still on the shelf somewhere, there is a good chance you will also see Thief I and II beside it.

Big battle for 2nd place.....it is possible the 2nd place game will be on the Championship Poll for 1998 tommorrow so vote on if you haven't

If thief comes in 2nd here, the question may be........do I put Thief: The Dark Project or Grim Fandango on the Championship Poll?.....hmmmm, I'll have to ponder.

Although if one only played the campaign in Starcraft and didn't really get into the multiplayer, I could easily see why they would rank Thief over it. Online play is always where Blizzard's games shine.

Not true sad to say. I see Starcraft Battlechest all the time at my favorite Best Buy but never any Thief game. I voted for Thief but you can't deny the love for Starcraft. I'm not a RTS fan but my dad was and he loved that game.

You guys can let this Poll go if you wish. Of course, you can keep the thread going if you want to but it has already been decided.

Instead, wander over to my Championship Poll for 1998 and vote if you wish:

http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=27216253&tag=topics;title

I ignored both Worms 2 and Worms Armageddon (which will be on one of my 1999 Polls) back in the day, but now i see why these games are highly rated and respected.
