I have a amd 4600+ and I love it.  I don't know much about opterons, but I heard they are really good overclockers.

If you get the right stepping, the 165 is going to hit 3-3.2ghz with your mobo.

Stepping is the week the chip was made.
The best way to find a good stepping is to buy a used one with the person telling you what stepping it is.

Best steppings:
  • Averaging >=2800
  • CCB1E 0550VPMW
  • CCB1E 0605XPMW
  • CCB1E 0608MPMW
  • CCB1E 0609FPMW/FPAW
  • CCBBE 0610DPMW (most consistent for 3GHz +)
  • CCBBE 0615DPMW/EPMW
  • CCBBE 0617FPMW
  • CCBWE 0602BPMW

The Opty 165 is a better overclocker by far... and judging from your mobo you'll at least hit 2.5 - 2.6 ghz even if you get a chip with bad stepping...

i've seen people with intel C2D e6600 hit up to 3.5ghz and their performance and benchmarks were amazing, but between those 2 the opteron would be the winner for overclocking
