Pretty simple, is it worth the upgrade?

Keeping in mind I have a 27" Samsung 1920x1080 monitor and there is nothing wrong with it, in fact it's only about two years old.

GPU power aside (I plan on grabbing a new GPU with the monitor, probably an Nvidia 880GTX) is it worth spending the money, or should I just wait until my current monitor craps out?

Maybe to 4k, but not to 1440. Even then, I'd wait until everything is much cheaper.

If you don't really have money to burn, simply wait for your monitor to die.

I went from 1080p to 1440p and I think it's worth it.

Everything is so much crisper and sharper. You can get a cheap Catleap for around 400 off ebay, that's what I'm using.

I have 1440P - 27" monitors that I picked up for $400 each.
It's much better then 1080P in my opinion.

I plan on going the route of the new Asus 27 inch 1440p G-Sync Monitor once it is out. (bye bye screen tearing, and input lag/system resource use from using V-sync for many years to come)

I was thinking of going 4k, but then these 2 main things kept me from it.

1. I want to be able to max my games, and have great FPS for more than just a year when buying some of the near top-of-the-line consumer components. Also I assume far more games will support 1440p than 4k, I mean 4k is still a "newish" resolution, although I would love to be proven wrong here.

2. PPI... I work with musical software, most of the gui's on the software are fixed sizes. (except for my Image-Line stuff, which is going vectorial) I am at 23 inch 1080p now, and some of the fixed plugin guis are kinda small. If I go to 1440p at 23 inches, that would probably be too small, so I am upping it 4 inches. At 4k under 30 inches its pretty much guaranteed that they will be too small.

Really depends what you're doing. Plan to game but don't plan to own an uber-gaming rig? Then heck no. Next-gen titles are going to struggle running maxed 60 FPS at 1080P - you'll be sacrificing pixel density for videogame graphics and picture quality. I feel like when you spend more money on a visual upgrade - you should always be getting more quality in all areas where it counts. Trading picture sharpness for the ability to play games at max settings seems counter-intuitive, especially since 1080P and 4K are supposed to be indistinguishable unless you're within 7.5ft of a 60" screen.

As far as 4k goes, it's absolutely impossible to recommend, because all 4k panels currently available are unresponsive for gaming with too much input lag. 1440P is easier to recommend because it's easier to drive and the panels are capable of gaming, but like I said before, 1080P is going to be hard enough to drive - even an 8800GTX isn't going to come within the realm of powering recent games at that resolution.

If you don't care about gaming at all and your PC is more for internet browsing, art, workspace, etc. - 1440P is great. 4K is a big waste right now. Wait for 4k content to exist, then get 4k.

I have 1440p monitor at home and a 1080p and another 1440p at my workplace, I've gotta say that I don't see a big difference between the monitors but I don't game on my work's PC so can really tell you the difference in games. About the 4K monitors I've never used one so I can't give you an informed opinion.

While you might be able to get games running at 4k now, just think about the future!

id go with 4k. you get the option to play games you cant play in 4k at 1440p and the prices have come down if you have a decent pc. but even at 1440p i will say it still looks very nice. AC Unity looks awesome at 1400p :-)
