I'm building a new gaming rig in a few weeks and can't decide to get windows 8.1 or stick with W7. Can't really test w8.1 64-bit because it does not support my current Athlon 64 x2 6000+ CPU.

I really don't mind the UI of W8/8.1, I just care about capability issues with games. I'll live with the annoying Metro UI if it gives an FPS increase.

Well directx 11.2 is exclusive to win 8.1 and gives a big boost to bf4 performance apparently. for other games i'm not sure.

You're asking about 8.1, and with 8.1 you don't have to deal with the Metro UI. So, you wouldn't have to live with it.

Lol yeah I sort of contradicted myself. Should have worded that better. I should have said I'll deal with the annoying UI but I won't deal with capability issues.

I prefer Win7, but with 8.1, the latest Windows is pretty decent.

My ASUS laptop came with Windows 8 (now 8.1). I've had no problems so far with any of my installed games:

Crysis 2, Crysis 3, Far Cry 3, Metro Last Light, Hard Reset, Mass Effects 1-2-3, Napoleon Total War, Bioshock 1, C&C 3: Tiberium Wars, and Civilization V

My only beef with Windows 8 is the ugly watercolor theme. I like Windows 7's eye candy better.....much better.

My friends that have gone to 8.1 have reported better performance in games. Not a huge difference, but noticeable.

If you are doing a fresh install of Windows, I see no reason to not go to 8.1, the hate for W8 is a little overblown. And if you don't want to deal with the Metro interface, you can easily get a start button replacer.

Well, that's good to hear in terms of game capability.

The system resource optimization is awesome and everything is so much faster only takes 5 seconds to boot up on my ssd.

This is coming from a IT Spec

No, there will be no gain jumping from 7 to 8. There is more wrong with 8 than right. You can't even disable UAC, you have to do it through regedit....

I've actually noticed slower response times in Windows 8 and strange slow downs here and there.

You will 80% of the time get higher FPS with Win 7.

I hated windows 8 at first and I went back to windows 7 for a while. A couple of weeks be for windows 8.1 I installed windows 8 and it took a couple of weeks getting use to but now I am happy with it and 8.1 update seems to be a lot faster then both windows 7 and windows 8. Games run a lot faster and smoother too. I have run old and new games from Star Trek Voyager Elite Force to bioshock infinite and also other games and have no problems running them. If its a new PC then I would go with Windows 8.1 as this will be the future but Windows 7 was an excellent OS and could have easily been an update for that if you wanted it but no they had to release a new OS just to make money. At least I got my Windows 8 for only £30 when it first came out as there where loads a deals on at the time but now there full price. Just to say I have windows 8.1 pro 64. I also don't use Metro but got it on but it just one click away from desktop which it self gets easy over time.
