Has anyone been able to get assassin's creed install on Windows 7 Ulitimate 64-bit? If so, how did you do it? I keep getting the "The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you are running...."

I have tried compatibility mode and running as admin but nothing seems to work. I have seen posts claiming people have it running, but no one ever explains how they did it.

I am stumped, and suggestions people could offer would be greatly appreciated.

I purchased the game from Direct2Drive if that makes a difference.

I'm not sure what your trouble could be. I happen to have the Steam version installed on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit Build 7100 (that's the RC). I simply double-clicked to start the first run on this OS, and had no trouble. There was a UAC popup for a first-run setup step, which appeared to be DirectX related. Then another screen appeared that listed several checkmarks saying my system meets all requirements, and then the game started right up. Second time running it: double-clicking just started the game right up without any of that first-run stuff.

I have no issues with the Steam version, either.. that doesn't really help, I guess :)

Thank for your responses. I wonder if steam prepatches their installs? Patch 1.02 make AC all 64-bit friendly.

I should have thought of that. The first suggestion is usually to patch the game to the newest version. And yes, Steam does automatically apply updates to games, although that's not always to the absolute newest version.

Example: Fallout 3. Steam installs 1.5 (I think), but to patch up to 1.7 and thus be ready for all the DLC so far, you've got to go through Games For Windows Live.

That's what is was. I purchased a copy from Steam and it loaded right up. To direct2Drive's credit, while they did tell me that I was running in an unsupoprtable config, they did give me a store credit.

Ubisoft also has a downloadable patch that works on both the steam and PC DVD versions that will update it for 64-bit Windows. http://www.ubi.com/US/Downloads/Info.aspx?dlId=2507 The patch notes read. . .

Assassin's Creed Patch v1.02 Please note that this patch can be used on both the US RETAIL (CD/DVD) version & the DOWNLOADABLE (D2D) version of the game.

. . .

Added support for x64 versions of Windows

Do you mean the Virtual XP Compatibility Mode? If so, it's not for gaming....

Exactly. XP Mode brings forward functions of XP so business applications which are not yet compatible with 7 can work. At the same time, things like DirectX and other gaming functions do not work properly in XP Mode, thus not recommended for gaming.

As far as I have tried,AC 2, Brotherhood and Revelations worked well on my Win 7 64-bit machine. Have not installed the first one on it.
