Will Valve ever make any more games?

I feel like its been forever since Portal 2. They worked on DOTA2 forever, but since then zip. WTH? Valve are some of the best developers in the industry. Is STEAM just that profitable that they've just said "screw it"?

I liked their singleplayer games (portal & half life) most of all. And I read that they were done with SP and wanted to focus on multiplayer games.

I also loved Day of Defeat. But Day of Defeat Source never really got anywhere. It was neither a sequel (TF2) or a remake in the source engine (CS:S). And it never really got popular, partly because Valve didn't really know what they wanted to do with the game. So I think that series is done too.

Valve will still make games. I won't care for them anymore though, like I haven't cared for CS:GO or DOTA.

in April, it will have been 4 years since they released a single player game.

They have DOTA 2 which is crazy popular and probably making them more money per month than any of their other games. They now also have CS:GO which has grown rapidly over the last year.

They know the market and apparently single player is no longer the market. I'm not sure they'll make a single player game ever again.

HL3 will come eventually. I think the main problem is that the expectations for it are so high that they're taking as much time as possible to make sure everything is exactly how they want it. I also think a 3rd Portal is inevitable as well.

I've become a bit put off by Valve these last couple of years. They are only interested in making games that will yield the most money possible but somehow they escape the wrath of the gaming community.

They are no different from companies like EA and Ubisoft in this regard, they are just better at putting a consumer-friendly spin on everything they do. Which is ultimately the best way for them to maximize profits.

Say what you will about Ubisoft and EA but they still pour money into singleplayer games, even though they clearly realize there is more money to be made in the F2P space (EA has made some pretty crude attempts at getting into this).

What makes it especially annoying for me is that I have no interest in DOTA2 or CS:GO, TF2 has gone off the deep end with items, and they stopped updating the one MP game I really loved, L4D2.

I've pretty much stopped buying games directly from steam unless there is no other option. They can be got cheaper elsewhere.

Personally, I don't mind Valve's preference for multiplayer. You wait a year for a single-player game to come out, you beat it within 20 hours, you move on, and eventually forget about it. I like the replayability multiplayer titles offer. Especially Valve's. They always have so much to offer.

This is true in theory but Valve have managed to release or at least actively update MP games in genres or subgenres I have no interest in. This is subjective I know but it doesn't help me much.

Give me L4D3 and I'll be happy but with Turtle Rock doing Evolve I doubt that will happen.

I guess the answer to that question is based on your time-frame. If it's open-ended, then yes - Valve will likely make more games. If you mean in the near future, the answer is likely no. At this point, they'd be better served cutting the Half Life series loose as any new episodes and new games will not be able to meet the hype-machine for them. Too much time has passed for new tie-ins for that game to work.

There's little financial reason for them to make more games. They are making a killing as a distributor plus DOTA and other games to sit around an do almost nothing all day and still fill the bank with money.

Yeah they'll make more games like DOTA 3. Meh. Valve used to be my favorite game developers. Not anymore. There is no reason for them to make games. Steam is profitable enough for them and they're busy making their OS. I know they are doing this for greater good but at least let one of the divisions work on GAMES.

@wis3boi:

Except Blizzard is still making games. Valve didn't even announce any game officially. Since Portal 2 we got Diablo 3, reaper of souls, heart of the swarm, hearthstone, warlords of drnenor, announcement of Overwatch and reveal of Legacy of the void and Heroes of the storm. Valve only released Dota 2 and counter strike go if that counts.

I don't think comparing Valve and Blizzard is a fair comparison.

Valve has quite a small portfolio of games and a much shorter track record, a rocky one at that. I don't even consider Valve a full-fledged game developer, they've turned into a haven for a communist culture or a reciprocal community of enthusiasts and developers, a sort of talent consignment network.

Blizzard remains a beacon of individualism and capitalism, the true American spirit. They release games on a regular basis and follow up with the finest after-market support money can buy. (Getting support from Steam? Haha, nice joke.) Blizzard has a staff of artists with original works, not just ones hijacked from other franchises. (Sometimes it seems like Valve can just ignore the law and steal others work, or are you going to act like the heroes in Dota 2 are based on Valve assets? Haha, another joke.)

After playing Dota 2 for several hundred hours, I've learned to appreciate the political philosophies of Karl Marx, and I have an exstensive Russian vocabulary.

I can see where you're coming from. I just hope all those rich ass hippies at Valve make some more classic games. Otherwise the PC is missing out.

Probably though I wouldn't blame them if they themselves stopped making games but rather contracted out the work to other development teams. How could you really blame them when they hold the top position in pc game retailers and services. I'd be focusing on keeping that lead, and improving upon that market and it's capabilities first and foremost. Making another game would be one of the last in my mind as a priority when your making so much money without having too.

Remember when we thought the wait between HL in 1998 and HL2 in 2004 was an eternity? Especially after it was delayed a year (originally slotted for 2003). It's been fucking 11 years since HL2 came out.

Man, Valve seriously needs to step up their game. They have the talent. They need to get their act together. BTW, still waiting...
