Me and my sister, for the first time, went scouring across the interwebs and we found that.... there were A LOT of horror games out there. Flash horror games, indie horror games, etc. Every horror game you could think of, it was out there :P.

My sister decided to try one out for the first time, she doesn't normally play video games (let alone horror games:lol:), and boy did she scare the crap out of herself :P.

She decided to play a little flash horror game known as "The House"

Here's the video if you guys are interested! :P

(All views, likes, and subscriptions are always welcome! :D )

Let's Play!: The House (Finale Episode: DON'T OPEN YOUR EYES!)

So my question for you guys is... what are your favorite PC/Mac Horror Games? :)

Favorite: Amnesia The Dark Descent Other good horror games: Penumbra series, FEAR (the first one), and that all I can remember at this moment.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent's gonna get a lot of love from here. It's pretty scary. No weapons or Rambo nonsense. A new game in the series is set to come out soon as well. Its predecessors, Penumbra, are also great. Then there's I'm Scared: A Pizelated Nightmare. Coming off of Amnesia, I thought that this wouldn't be any good. I mean, look at it. The graphics are pixelated and blocky, and I just finished with the sexy and beautiful Amnesia. NOPE! It's still pretty effing terrifying. Short game, too, so there's not a big requirement for commitment. Honorable mention would be Lone Survivor. Pixel 2D graphics with some combat elements, but ultimately still a tense experience. Avoid some of the later F.E.A.R. and Dead Space games if you're looking for true horror, though I guess they're scarier for people who don't usually play video games. Dark and gory, but some of the best action sequences of the decade distract from the horror.

Fear 1, great game.

One of the comments on the youtube page said Amnesia meets Mirror's Edge because of the light parkour gameplay. SOLD!

That does look pretty awesome, nice graphics and will probably have some good scares, but that trailer didn't convince me that it will compare to Amnesia in terms of sheer horror. It looked too action oriented and the fact you can clearly see what's chasing you eliminates one of the core elements of what makes Amnesia such a scary game - the fear of not knowing what is actually chasing after you.

The prison inmate guy is just one of the horrors of the game. I'm sure there's a bigger surprise.

I'm playing alan wake and the dark north washington american atmosphere is great, not scary at all but intense.

#23 Posted by Oldgun (154 posts) -

Here's some good PC horror games that I really enjoyed, some are pretty old but worth a try

Condemned- Criminal Origins

Condemned 2- Bloodshot

Sanitarium

Sherlock holmes- Awakened (not horror but have some very creepy moments)

Alan Wake (Ignore American Nightmare)

Dark Seed I and II

I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream

Martian Gothic

Obscure I and II

As I said some are pretty old but they're gems from the past.

The scariest would be Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth and Penumbra.

Other good horror PC games though not scary are Condemned: Criminal Origins, Alan Wake.

I played Alan Wake including all DLCs, you'll definitely enjoy it. Well, American Nightmare is technically not a DLC and a stand alone game. Sure, you can play (I played it hence I'm not recommending) but it will become annoyingly repetitive, if you play, you'll understand what I mean. Don't want to spoil anything.

'Scratches' is probably my favourite.

There's a little game that's still in Development but has a playable version called Shutter.

Was this inspired by the movie? Hmmm looks pretty interesting.

Well, I can't say I am a fan of horror games and haven't played much of them, but I remember that I enjoyed a game called "The Suffering". Even though it's more of a TPS action game it has lots of horror elements. And currently I am playing Dark Souls on PC. This game...oh, the horror!

True that!! I played both parts and can say it's a pretty decent game.

Well Amnesia might be going on sale via Steam very soon and judging by everyones opinions about it, i'm sure it'll be my new favourite horror game.

Still can't believe i don't have it...

Amnesia was awesome. Probably one of the best "horror" games I've played in a while. If you're looking for a game that's mainly scary, unsettling and has a great story then this should be at the top of your list. The Penumbra games are also very good, although Anmesia is the best title from that developer in terms of both story and gameplay IMHO.

Alan Wake (the core game) was also pretty decent. Not strictly speaking the scariest game ever (it was a little too action-heavy to be scary), it excelled in many other categories such as rich, lucious environments that felt like real places, good voice acting and an excellent overall story. The game had amazing atmosphere and was very well polished. The two DLCs are also decent and continue the story where it left off and American Nightmare is alright and doesn't detract from the overall experience.

Dead Space 1 and 2 are fun and well put together games but are debatably not horror games, but rather action games with a horror setting. They are still pretty good games, but with all the running and gunning it's hard to call them horror. They fall under a similar category to games like Resident Evil 4, 5 and 6 (4 being the best, 6 being decent and 5 being the worst) or the later FEAR titles.

Home and Loan Survivor are both 8-bit throwback indy sidescrolling horror games, but they are decent if you don't mind that category.

Older titles that fall under this category are the original Alone in the Dark series and System Shock 1 and 2.

Outlast I hadn't heard of but I'm very curious.

Sadly this is an under represented category of game on PC. On console there are a ton of good horror games like the Clock Tower series, Fatal Frame series, Kuon, Galerians, Siren series, Eternal Darkness, Echo Night series, etc.

I know a lot of these, but I wouldn't go so far as to call all of them horror. "Or games with horror elements" being a key distinction as many of the games in your list fall in that category. Zork Nemesis? Dino Crisis 1 maybe but 2 is a straight up action game. Manhunt 1 and 2 aren't exactly horror either.

There are a lot more action/FPS games that have horror elements but aren't really horror games. Undying is a great example of this. If you take a sci-fi FPS and cut and paste zombies in place of robots it doesn't really make the game a horror game.
