Hi. I will soon be going to a grad school which requires that I buy either my own MAC or PC laptop with the following requirements:

Budget: Under $2,000

Mac laptops.

  • Current or recent MacBook Pros with i7, i5 or Core 2 Duo processor.
  • Minimum 4GB RAM (8GB recommended).
  • 7,200rpm or SSD internal drive

Windows laptops:

Since I will be working with Avid, they suggest either Dell or HP laptops, with either i7 or Core 2 Duo processors

  • Windows v7 64-bit SP1(Professional) or Windows v8, v8.1 (Professional and Enterprise)
  • Minimum 4GB RAM (8GB strongly recommended). Internal HDD - size not so important as I recommend external drives for media. 7,200rpm or SSD internal drive will offer best performance.

Graphics cards:

  • NVIDIA Quadro K1000M or K2000M
  • NVIDIA Quadro 3000M
  • NVIDIA Quadro 1000M
  • NVIDIA Quadro 4000M
  • NVIDIA FX 2800M
  • NVIDIA FX 1800M
  • NVIDIA FX 2800M
  • NVIDIA FX 3800M
  • NVIDIA Quadro FX 2700M or Quadro FX 3700M
  • NVIDIA Quadro FX 770M
  • They recommend nothing with a screen size less than 15".

Personally I would go with the Macbook Pro with the i7.
