VGA is a 15pin video cable used mostly with computers. It contains pins for Red, Green, Blue, Horizontal/Vertical synching, a clocking channel, and data channel. It offers excellent control of an analog display. Compenent Video is a 3-5 RCA video cable. the 3 RCA cable is the most common and is used in HDTV's has a Red, Green, Blue inputs and synching can be linked to one of the 3 color inputs; usually green. It offers decent control of the analog display but VGA is much better.

Actually it depends on the monitor/hdtv to see either vga or component is better. Component tends to be very sharp, sometimes too sharp for some people. VGA tends to be a bit blurred where component is sharp, so it usually gives a..."smoother" picture, but a lot of people complain that VGA's colours are a lot more washed out than component. Also, not all hdtv's and monitors accept 1080p over component.

That has nothing to do with VGA though. Just because a monitor/HDTV doesn't handle VGA well does not mean component is a better connection. VGA is better due to it's makeup. Component may be better for certain situations though.
