I was wondering if it is a good idea to get a new hard drive. Also if I do get a new one and put vista on it, is xp still on the old one. thanks, I know these questions may seem dumb but I just need to know.
Well, you don't NEED an new hard drive, but if you want to be able to use XP, you will want to partition your old HDD, placing XP and everything else on one and keeping another empty, because if you do install Vista on a drive that XP is on, it will rename the Windows folder "Windows.Old" and it will be rendered unusable. So yeah, the cheapest solution is to partition your old drive if you haven't already. Once you install it, I believe XP's boot manager will let you choose, at start up, which you want to use. As long as you don't overwrite XP, or let Vista render it useless, XP will still be accessible.
I am not 100% sure, but if you buy a VIsta upgrade, that will invalidate the XP CD-key. This would deactivate XP the next time it made a check through the internet. Maybe someone can comment on this.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't completely render your key useless, but, I think it's an agreement in the EULA. You can still use the key, but illegally. Don't buy the upgrade version, get the regular one..
