So as of right now I have an i7-2600, 8GB of RAM and a GT420. I it's not much but my pc has been playing games pretty decently for the last years (Mass Effect 3 was gorgeous), except I just bought a few games from 2013 and holy mother of god the fps. I thought my pc was dying before my eyes (alas, no).

So yeah, I guess it's time to upgrade. My guess is the main problem is the graphics card, which is why I've been thinking of getting a 760. Any other recommendations? Perhaps the CPU isn't up to scratch...?

That i7 2600 is still pretty good. But that gpu, its been holding you back.
A 760 would be nice. What is the budget? Because if you throw in a little more cash, you could get a 280x.
vram will play a role in the upcoming future and the 280x has 3gb of it.

Budget is 250, 300 euros (I live in Spain) at most though that might be stretching it. Glad to know the i7 still holds up!

GTX 760 or R9 280 or R9 280X - $265 after rebate.

I have 2500k with 290 amd. Gpu upgrades breaths new life to the system. You'd be surprise by the difference. Tell us what you think once you upgrade.

Try to see if there's R9 290 at your budget limit.

Yeah i would say price performance wise the R9 280X would be the best choice

An i7 is weak now ? In my country I am lucky to have this E2160. I would recommend that you get a better graphics card then overclock your CPU.
