I think the real questions should be - Which game has the largest map that doesn't need re-loading within the game? Which open-world game employs the best overall graphics, physics and environmental interactivity? Which open-world game is the closest in finding the sweet-spot between visual-realism and hardware-resource management?

Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising had a 50KM squared map size. That is pretty big although I am sure something must of had bigger. Just Cause 2 had a 35KM squared map I think. Past that I am not sure.

Yeah, and according to that, it's almost twice as big as World of Warcraft. That I do not believe.

We talked about this before, but you spend most of the time in Burnout Paradise traveling, well... much, much, much faster than you ever do in WoW. Just thinking about it, even a flying creature was probably 30-40mph or so, and the cars in Burnout are tearing around at 4x that at least. Drive at a walking pace and see how long it takes to cross the map, maybe.

edit: Yeah, thinking about it - I'm inserting the Burnout vehicles in WoW's map, mentally. I'm pretty sure they could clear the entirety of Stormwind in one jump or drive the Deeprun Tram in what, 10-15 seconds if they're going flat-out? The cars in Burnout are *fast.*

Yeah but look at the size of it compared to GTA:SA, you could drive and fly very fast in that game and it felt bigger than BP yet it's not even a 4th the size.

Also I just remembered another game, Test Drive Unlimited. A whole Hawaiian island

I'm pretty sure this is the correct answer. Most of the games mentioned in this thread use techniques that simulate having a huge map. And as you traverse the map, it loads on the fly. As for WW2 Online, due to the engine's poor coding, I've heard that it literally loads the entire world map and is active in your RAM the entire time you play. Probably explains the poor performance and load times.

Going by these standards Just Cause 2 wins, with Far Cry 2 a close second.

Making a map big is easy. I can make a infinitely large procedureally generated map for a simple 2d game in a couple of hours.

Making the map interesting however is the hard part.

I've played a bunch of the games in that picture (sans daggerfall, lotro, asherons call, test drive, fuel) and by far the most diverse, interesting and interactive map is that of WoW.

Yeah. I was really impressed by Just Cause 2. The attention to detail is pretty amazing. On the other hand, FarCry 2 is a bit 'meh' for me.

Open TTD can produce maps of 2048*2048, not sure what that works out as but i think it's about 250,000 square miles. A Simcity 4 region is of a similar size. Total war works in at over 10,000,000 square miles (that's just Europe), Civ and the Paradox games (Hearts of iron ect) work in at about 500,000,000 square miles. Eve Online of course has the most working out at approximately: 251,327,412,287,183,459,077,011 square miles based on 5000 systems of the approximate size of the solar system, however this does not include the space between star systems. If i include the space between star systems based on the difference between the sun and alpha centuri the map is about 6400 fold bigger which works out at 1,608,495,438,637,974,138,092,870,400 square miles. Note this is only in square miles, as you can travel in 3 dimensions and not just 2 for a full representation you would have to measure it in cubic miles. In cubic miles, using a quick powers calculation, it works out at 6.45*10^40 cubic miles.

Not surprised to see Just Cause 2 to be in first place. It is a huge island and every place of the map is different. It can either be jungle or forest or desert or snowy mountain or even urban city. The island has loads of different enemy bases such as depots, naval yards, energy centers, space research facilities, barracks etc. and they don't look similar at all. I guess that Avalanche Studios made such a great achievement with their games.

For Burnout Paradise, it is usual to be one of the biggest map because it is a racing game. The roads must be very long and complicated to satisfy the driving feeling. Also the Big Surf island pack makes the city even bigger.

About those picture comparisons, nobody really has accurate measurements for WoW because nobody bothered but the original WoW world without Outland and Northrend feels at least as big as JC 2 as for the ones that are "defending" Burnout...I hope you at least checked before believing such things, it's 26 square miles, we're talking about the game "world" notstreets, because this game isn't as big as almost half of Oahu from TDU.

Flight Simulator X no questions asked, whole earth is a map.

I must say GTA IV has a high detailed map, Liberty city is awesome.
