so i started preloading titanfall today. The damn thing is 49 gb. I really can't fathom how a multiplayer only game with visuals that aren't even all that good (id say its a 2010 level game, visually) could be that crazy huge. I'm really glad i chose the 2tb drive now though

Really? That's insane. I agree. No reason that game should be that large.

#4 Edited by Kevlar101 (5971 posts) -

Most PS4/X1 games are going to require 40GB installs. It's not at all exclusive to Titanfall.

By that math, you could only have 12.5 games on either console, maximum.

#5 Posted by pelvist (4467 posts) -

@Kevlar101: Respawn tweeted 20gig Installed on the XBONE though.

I've started to get used to 20 GB games but 40GB? Damn that's a lot.

Maybe EA has crap tons of DLC in the game files and you'd have to unlock them later on by paying for them.

Considering it runs the source engine which is incredible efficient there is absolutely no logical reason for a game that size. The only thing I can think is that they purposely left files uncompressed to make the game install larger in size. Why they would do that I can't fathom but there is no way the game could be over 40gb otherwise.

Took a huge chunk out of my hard drive definitely!

#9 Posted by FelipeInside (25041 posts) -

Maybe lots of cutscenes? (fingers crossed)

#10 Edited by Ballroompirate (21675 posts) -

Wow is like 60+ gigs, yea it's a MMO but it's on a engine that's what 10 years old?

Honestly I'm more surprised if games are less than 30 GB, specially now and days.

#11 Posted by dethtrain (384 posts) -

Lots of sounds?

#12 Posted by wis3boi (30891 posts) -

Dont really see any excuses for that. It's a MP only game with maps the size of my front lawn. Reminds me of Force Unleashed....zero reason for that shitty port to take up 50gb of space

#13 Posted by thereal25 (300 posts) -

Is it avail. on pc could I can't see it on steam

#14 Posted by BattleSpectre (5952 posts) -

Yeah it's 20GB on the Xbox One. Not sure why they demand such high installs.

Why? because f^ck you!

Seriously did you even thought they're going to care about the gamers? there're two types of bad optimization, the second on called overly exhadurated file sizes.

#16 Posted by Cyberdot (3510 posts) -

It's for the added explosions, killstreaks and a heck loads of perks.

#17 Posted by 8-Bitterness (3707 posts) -

I mean, not even kidding here, it downloaded at a blazing fast speed just like the beta (when compared to any other download) so I don't even mind the size to be honest.

#18 Edited by Jimmy_Russell (419 posts) -

The file sizes are disproportionately large due to the uncompressed 7-channel digital audio and high resolution texture files. Normally game files are compressed on the game discs. Leaving the files uncompressed enables lossless 7.1 Dolby TrueHD Surround Sound audio.

#19 Posted by REforever101 (11138 posts) -

@thereal25: its with great sorrow that I must report that it is only available on origin

#20 Edited by with_teeth26 (5993 posts) -

my poor Canadian bandwidth is going to have a hard time with all these 'next-gen' ports.

EA doesnt sell on steam anymore

From what I recall when a game takes up a large amount of non-needed HDD space there can be 2 reasons;

1) additional "data" is attached to the otherwise small game size in order to provide smoother "read" of the files or whatever to enhance game stability;

2) the game file's data is not compressed due to sloppy programming and coding of engine etc.

Regardless, I don't even plan to buy that piece of crap "product" that will pop out of EA's a$$hole ... Since ME3 I've stopped caring about EA/Origin.

Damn 49gigs is crazy (stupid EA)

Your correct (my hate for EA resulted in a premature rant)

#26 Posted by dethtrain (384 posts) -

So if it's lossless audio can anyone with surround sound comment if it was worth the hard drive space? I've been playing stereo my whole life but looking into surround sound

#27 Posted by nutcrackr (12274 posts) -

It's 34gb of unpacked audio files. I'm not even sure why.

I explained it pretty clearly in my post above.

LOL at high resolution textures....

you mean these?

that is a ground texture on "INSANE" settings... you know... the setting that REQUIRES you to have a 3GB VRAM graphics card? i have posted others from HIGH settings and they are pretty much equally as bad.

"high resolution textures" rofl... what a fucking joke.

#30 Posted by REforever101 (11138 posts) -

so according to reddit its that large because the audio files are completely uncompressed and because they included ever single language with the install, instead of doing the non-lazy thing of letting you pick which one you wanted

So if you buy retail, is it compressed?

Dolby TrueHD isn't uncompressed - it uses lossless compression (similar to FLACs).

a full day of patching for consoles I read. For just this game.

The game ran pretty badly during the beta and I have a pretty nice PC. 50GBs is way too much even with games getting bigger and better graphically. Titanfall is also a Source Engine game...how much in the way of assets could there be? I mean BF3 looks better than Titanfall and only took up around 35 GBs even with all its DLC...gotta call BS at some point.

#36 Posted by silversix_ (13625 posts) -

Because this game uses next gen textures and lighting unseen by a human eye, oh waiiiiiiiit a second, nvm wrong game... i have no flying shit idea why this game is over 10gb. How much was CS GO? Its pvp only and looks better lol no way Titanfail is 50gb

CSGO is about 6 gigs. Hahaha.

The HL2 Cinematic Mod is a 50gb install for a source engine game, but it looks better than Titanfall, and is a complete re-texturing (among other things) of the entirety of Half Life 2, and Episode One and Two.

It's uncompressed audio and every language pack made for the game. You have no choice but to download it all. i.e laziness

this article is funny. They say the reason the file is so large is because of audio for lower end machines.

Doesnt exactly explain why other high end PC games do not have this size.

well that sounds stupid. like you said, doesn't seem to be a problem for other high end games.

It's a first person shooter, what the hell are you doing staring at the ground anyway?

This screams we have a tone of content we want to sell you down the line that we will preload even if it's not finished onto your computer so that when you do buy it it will only take a fraction of the time to download the small patch to finish and update the content to the game properly. I'm glad I stuck clear of this one, as 49gb is unacceptable.
