Yeah still not enough performance for 4K... VRAM is not the issue, SLI GTX 970 pretty much beats it in the majority of games at 4K.

12GB VRAM is absolutely useless for gaming no matter the resolution.

I would wait for the GTX 980 Ti 6GB which will perform the same and be cheaper.

Scott Wasson from The Tech Report:

For those of us with slightly more modest means, I expect Nvidia will offer a slimmed-down version of the GM200 with 6GB of GDDR5 in a new card before long. Rumors are calling it the GeForce GTX 980 Ti, but I dunno what the name will be. Value-conscious buyers might want to wait for that product. But what do they know?

I think we are gonna see a 980Ti that might not perform the same but at least it will be near TitanX while it will cost 1/3 less (my guesstimate goes around $650-$700)...

That's sorta what I look for. I hope they release a full utilized chip right away and not like last time.

OK, my previous post was in jest (Hardware-wise X1 is a joke) but seriously, 4K is ridiculous for gaming. It's a colossal waste of resources. Tons of power being sucked up for only marginal gains in eye-candy ... in 99% of realistic situations anyway. I suppose if you're gonna superglue the monitor to your forehead you might see a bit of a difference. 1080p/60 is plenty for gaming. Certainly no more than 1440p is necessary. Sure, the more powerful the GPU the better but the extra power should go to better art, effects, larger environments, etc.

As I have said on the official GS article, I would rather buy 4x 290s at that price and enjoy myself real 4K experience with over 100fps on max settings.

I wonder why they dropped double precision. The original Titan was a monster at it, and was a reason a lot of people could justify the price. The Titan X is absolutely horrible for it, worse than a 580.

Seriously I would recommend you guys wait til DX12 comes out in regards what it does for performance before you drop so much money on a graphics card.. Especially if you have something like a 780/970/980/X290

That stock temp of 83c and 40+ DB sound level... Is a total deal breaker.

Maybe when NVidia lets them put 3 slot coolers on it... I would consider buying it.

That's like an added $100+. Then you still need tubing, pump, reservoir, liquid and fittings. Way to much extra cost.

Yeap. You are probanly right. But at least there is an option that most people that could spend $1000 for a GPU, wouldn't mind spending some extra...

R9 295X 2 blows it out of the water, and can be found for $670. This cards a fucking joke, again Nvidia going for the rich early adapters while holding back designs that would have been worth the money. This thing can't even do 4k ultra 60fps so why the **** is it worth $1000?

I always thought Titan was a midway between a gaming card and a workstation card. I am not sure why the DP performance was cut so drastically.

I'm thinking that this is the first Titan X. Then by the end of the year or early next year they'll bring out a "Black" version or something with full DP and more cores etc along with the cut down GM200 6GB 980TI/Titan lite

Well the first Titan wasn't a full GM200 (2688/2880). This is a full GM200 so there is no room for improvement with more cores.

There might be an improvement with die shrink, similar to G200 chip, where GTX280 was replaced by GTX275 (similar performance to GTX280) and GTX285 (10-15% more performance).

But I don't know if they will do a die shrink since there are no plans till pascal...

Btw can you (or @horgen or @kitty) contact Mark Walton and tell him that I think there is an error in Crysis 3 @ Very High, FXAA 1440p benchmarks. I am not so sure that Titan X is 200% faster than GTX980 / R9 290X in 1440p at Crysis 3. After looking the results of 4K too, I think that he might took the FPS numbers of 4K for GTX980 and R9 290X and place them by mistake at 1440p.

Not really, I think when people reviewed 4K gaming with 2-4 way GPU setup, they would mention stuttering.

Its also near the limit of 28nm from TSMC which is 650mm²... (Titan is 601 mm²)

I still can't believe people are willing to fork out $1000+ for a single video card by itself....

These days you can build a whole gaming PC for that price.

After the disappointing high temps and loudness of the Titan X... I officially said screw it and now will be sticking with GTX 970 for at least the next 1 to 1.5 years.

Picked up the Zotac AMP! Extreme Core Edition. It's got front plate, back plate, 3 fan cooler, tied with HOF factory OC, has OC'ed memory by 190 MHz and Free Witcher 3.

So screw it... lol

I've been waiting for a single card to power 4k for some time now.

But this clearly isn't it.

As for buying more than one of these monsters - no, that just doesn't make sense to me.

@Gaming-Planet:

Next year they said Pascal is going to be 2x performance per watt vs Maxwell. So the next $500 GPU in 2016 built on Pascal will surpass Titan X by a good 30%+. That's if they don't skimp on the die size... Because they are going to be using 16nm. If they use 350mm^2 it should work out that way.

Hopefully in 2 years a card like this will be affordable. About the time I will upgrade, which is usually every 2-3 generations.

Wait a minute, you upgrade every 2 - 3 generations?

You realize that 2 gens is roughly 14 - 16 years right?

:P.

Fermi: March 26, 2010 (GTX480)

Kepler: March 22, 2012 (GTX680)

Maxwell: September 18, 2014 (GTX980) *I will not even count GTX750ti...

So where are the 14-16 years?

(Unless you mean console generations, which cannot happen for many compability reasons).

I usually do a tick/tock upgrade pattern too (2/3 gens...usually 2).

8800GT, 5770, 570 GTX, 670 GTX, and now 970 sli (I went the extra mile last time to push my Swift Rog)

It's tempting. I do have my tax return burning a hole in my savings account...

Maybe you should give to charity

No.
