What do think are the most underrated rpgs on PC?

Please post your picks:)

- Divine Divinity - awesome story, good characters and a real big world

- Beyond Divinity - another underrated game from the same people that did Divine Divinity

- Gothic 3 - I see all these reviews trashing it but from what ive played the last few months, im loving it!

- Diablo 2 - Not underrated as far as the community goes, but on gamespot it didnt get AAA so i had to list it

- The Witcher - Another one that everyone but reviewers seemed to just love

- Wizardry Gold - This game got pretty average-bad reviews, but i loved it alot!

- Arx Fatalis - Fantastic little rpg with amazing atmosphere and story.

- Elderscrolls: Daggerfall - My personal fav of the series

- Jade Empire - Sure its not KOTOR, but i enjoyed the characters, story and gameplay. Not perfect but still fun.

- Titans Quest and expansion pack - Another underrated little rpg

Im sure im missing some, but they will come to me later

mmm.... i dont consider Oblivion an rpg... more of an action game, sure i spent some hours on it and enjoyed it a little, but yeah i dont really think its underrated or an rpg.

So you consider Diablo 2 and Titan's Quest to be RPG's but not Oblivion? I don't understand the logic behind that.

Probably Arcanum.

Heroes of Might and Magic IV

Anachronox is a fantastic but a bit buggy sci-fi rpg.

The entire gothic series is sorely underated.

Deus Ex 1.

Silver back in.....98 or 99, i forgot. i bet not many of you have even heard of this game, and it's VERY rare now. i borrowed it from my friends and it was great.

Wizardy 8. the last chapter of the renowned series doesn't get nearly half the attention it deserves.....

Deus Ex 1. biggest_loser

That was FAR from underrated.

IN my mind an rpg either has a powerful character development system stat based, stratgic and unique.. Which can make your experience dramatically different form class and build constantly.. STrong emphasis on loot.. A la Diablo 2..

Another is strong story, dialogue, moral choices.. Etc etc.. really can go to a variety such as BG2..

Or a balance of both..

Oblivion has niether.. No good character stat development, nor any story or dialogue.

And the most under rated rpg I have ever played is.... Vampires the Masqerades.. With patchs both officail and unofficial ,its easilly a AAA.. And there is no other rpg quite like it..

I agree, Dues Ex is a great game, which has an incrediblely immense world, and you can interact with almost every item. Unfortunately it didn't have a very good marketing campaign. You know, Gametap gave the special expanded addition out on its free game area, so that's how underrated it is!

Without a doubt Wizardry 8 and Arcanum. Two really good RPG's. It's a shame they don't make them like that anymore.

I can understand propping up Divine Divinity - but Beyond Divinity? That one deserves its bad rep.

Everything i can think of's been mentioned already, except Temple of Elemental Evil.

Jade Empire i agree with, a very underrated RPG on the PC probably because it was a console port and while it had sticky controls it was an awesome game i thought.

Vampire the Masqeurade: Bloodlines is also an RPG i feel is rather underrated by many people. Its just got an awesome setting to it and i enjoyed the gameplay. A great RPG in my opinion.

If anything, I think Jade Empire is overrated. I've read quite a few good things about it; not all that many bad. The games was very dissapointing. The characters were shallow; the story was shallow. The ending was lame. The "choice" aspect was a joke. Though I guess, really, I was most bitter at the much-toted lesbian romance. It was a very big letdown. :P

Titan Quest is praised right and left! In every of the 3 million threads where people are looking for games like Diablo, Titan Quest is highly recomended. The game is pathetic, soulless trash.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines I agree is a very good game.. I don't know that it is really underrated though. It got fairly good reviews that were understandably toned down because of the initial bugginess, and those who have played it seem to hold it in generally high regard.

compared to Oblivion, every CRPG is underrated.

with the popularity of Diablo 2, how it is rated is irrelevant.

then, the most underrated CPPG is Arcanum, followed by Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.

on a slighter scale, mostly due to Mass Effect's overrating, Neverwinter Nights 2 + MotB and The Witcher.

Great list!

Agree especially with Divine Divinity and Arx Fatalis. Arx Fatalis in particular is one of my favorit RPG's period. The game drips with atmosphere, and the world was extremely interactive. There was also many solutions and different ways to tackle situations. I think the only problem with it was no matter how you tackled the game, the end was the same. I think it's a small blemish considering the journey to get there was amazing.

It also had by far the coolest way of crafting a weapon in game. Although it was underused (actually I would love to see something like that become standard in RPG and MMO games), it was really cool.

*edit*

Actually I think Dark Messiah also had a very cool crafting mechanic as well...

The Witcher has a total score of 8.1. That's not bad at all.

How is the combat in Gothic? Is it more like an action RPG or like click on the enemy and wait for it to die?
#24 Posted by dnuggs40 (10484 posts) -

It's more like an action RPG...but honestly even then combat isn't Gothic's strong point. If you have ever played Two Worlds it's very similar to that.

Still manages to be a fantastic game due to how amazing the game world is.

Arcanum, Arx Fatalis, Freedom Force, Lionheart.

Ok, maybe I'll buy the Gothic Universe pack when I can.

Action RPG, it's not "played" with a mouse. Imo Gothic 2 is the best overall RPG of it's kind, with a very good story, awesome world and a very good combat system. Gothic 3 is good too, but the combat is kinda like Oblivion's, it totaly sucks.

Gothic 2 combat

Gothic 3 combat

My list: Gothic 3,2, ETQW, Wizardry 8, Heroes IV and V + expansions, Dungeon Siege 2.

#28 Posted by dnuggs40 (10484 posts) -

I enjoyed Gothic 3 more then Oblivion due to the great detail that went into the world, but Oblivion's combat totally outshines Gothic 3's.

Anachronox is the most epic game I've ever played. Told beautifully. It's magic from start to finish. Barely anyone's played it too, which is why it's perfect for this list. Oh, and it's also an RPG. :P
#30 Posted by naval (11109 posts) -

recently, NWN 2 - MotB.

Overall I felt arcanum is pretty underrated and overlooke. Out of the older games I think darklands is also quite overlooked

Gothic 3

I agree with Anachronox, Arx Fatalis and Gothic 3.

But all these votes for Arcanum....that game just sucked for me. The setting and dialogue were ok, but the combat system was so terrible and the skill/levelling system was way too convoluted.
