I've been reading these forums for quite some time and whenever someone wishes for recommendations for specific genres the same games are always brought up. I am not denying that these games are good, in fact I think most of them are fantastic. I would only like to provide a little more flavor then what is currently being provided. Upon reading all of the ages of the users in these forums it became evident that maybe they simply did not know that these games existed or they were just simply forgotten, replaced by the graphical greats we see before us today. I only seek to inform individuals of fantastic games that may have been forgotten.

Good day.

If that's the case, then yes I am mad. Also, please spell out the "OF," not very good with acronyms.

What about Soldiers: Heroes of WW2 for the RTS section?  That was a forgotten epic.  And so was Planetside for FPS/RPG.  They have a free version of that now...

Operation Flashpoint

Ah forgot about that one and it's one of my favorite games, used to calling it OFP. Added on the list, thanks.

Good call on Soldiers: Heroes of WW2, added onto the list along with Planetside. I wasn't going to add Diablo 2 since it still is pretty well-known, recommended and discussed but I added Diablo. As for the old Warhammer games I own a few of them myself and they have some issues when trying to be installed on XP (like Dark Omen and Final Liberation) so I was a little against having them on the list. Thanks for the ideas though.

Keep em coming guys, I'd like this to be pretty extensive so players know that they are plenty of fantastic games out there.

Warcraft 2 added. As mentioned already, D2 and its expansion LOD are already pretty well-known amongst the player base and the same goes for Warcraft 3 and Guildwars. This list is mainly comprised of games that rated well and played excellently but were either overshadowed by other games or were simply forgotten. Thank you for your contribution.

Good list overall, but needs some additions:

-Independence War (2-part series)

This small space sim series actually comes closer to the term "sim" than most other games out there(with some exceptions, such as Terminus)due to the actual use of Newtonian physics. That, and a highly detailed damage model. The gameplay seems quite good, but I haven't had the fortune of playing a full version of either game.

-Carmageddon (3-part series)

Please tell me you haven't forgotten this one...visceral carnage with motor vehicles at its finest! Don't want to race through checkpoints? Then waste your opponents or try to kill every single pedestrian on the map(unless you're playing TDR, in which strict time limits force you to race!)! Especially satisfying are the powerups introduced in Carma 2, ranging from mines/mortars that blow up anyone unfortunate enough to collide with one, repulsificators that send any nearby opponents or peds flying, and the "mutant tail thing", a mace connected to the back of your vehicle that can be cut off as you spin your vehicle to hit a poor pedestrian and get an Award for Outstanding Achievement!

-Star Control 2: The Ur-Quan Masters

This epic space RPG is a classic in every respect. Great story, great gameplay, excellent music, and it's FREE. Of course, if you don't feel like hopping around the galaxy to collect lifeforms or blow up random aliens or whatever, you can just hop into Super Melee and school a friend...

-Cave Story (Doukutsu Monogatari)

A freeware platformer from Japan that was translated to English not too long ago, I'm sure this game will also fall into the classic category. Gameplay is similar to that of Metroid or post-SotN Castlevania, only with more plot and character interaction. It's said that there are three very different endings that you can get, though I have yet to get even one of them. (I keep getting distracted by other games.)

Oh, and one thing of note: PlanetSide has very little, if any, RPG elements. You'll have to wait until Twilight War to get your MMORPG/FPS hybrid. (That'll probably be the game that'll make me an MMO addict, not WoW or EQ or whatever else they have out there...)

One question, do you have to apply to a moderator in order to get a thread stickied? I think this thread can help people out a great deal, in case this thread were to become pushed back.

I agree with you, Oni is a fantastic game. It joins together gunplay, close combat and sci-fi fantasy with an anime-inspired artestry.

in fact, do you know any other anime-inspired pc games?

Impeccable taste. NOLF, Interstate, UT, Thief and Deus Ex. All genuine classics. But how the hell did Soldier of Fortune 2 get in there? That has to be one of the most dissapointing games I've ever played. The start was great, but it only went down from there, particularly in level design.

Many of the newer recommendations added, some I don't wish to put on there namely some of the old adventure games since they may be too old in order to work with WinXP or without series modding and emulation. Thanks everyone.

in fact, do you know any other anime-inspired pc games?

Sadly it's the only one I know about and it is one of my favorite games. I would love for Bungie to do a sequel but they are quite busy with Halo 2 for Vista and more then likely busy with Halo 3. They're a console company these days, sorry to say. But if you're looking for nitty gritty combat similar to Oni then I may suggest Die By The Sword. A bit gorier than its counterpart and a little more buggy but it is extremely fun and fulfilling.

Keep em coming guys and thanks again!

...didn't look that good. I saw the gameplay video. Yeah, Vin Diesel- not the person I'd play with.

Now if it were Samuel Jackson, hell yeah I WOULD!

I was expecting more stealth oriented gameplay from Riddick. It was like that in the beginning but eventually turned into a guns blazing extravaganza which threw me off a little. Even because of this shortcoming (imho) it was still a well made and enjoyable game.

You should definetly add MechWarrior 4: Vengeance and/or MechWarrior4: Mercenaries. (they are both stand alone games, mercenaries is NOT an expansion of vengeance. mechwarrior 4: black knight however IS an expansion to vengeance, lol).

They were terriffic games that not many people play anymore because they are much older.  They both have a great campaign and multiplayer, and even if not many people are online, they still have pretty good AI that can give you a run for your money.

Don't forget Xwing-Alliance in the sim category

Works great on WinXP, and is getting a graphical overhaul due to the dedicated work of darksaber and co.

Also - anyone interested in Freespace 1 or 2 *needs* to check out the work going on at Hard-Light Productions with the Source Code Project.
