The Forgotten Games Recommendation List

This topic is locked from further discussion.

#1 Posted by MythPro1 (2746 posts) -

I've been reading these forums for quite some time and whenever someone wishes for recommendations for specific genres the same games are always brought up. I am not denying that these games are good, in fact I think most of them are fantastic. I would only like to provide a little more flavor then what is currently being provided. Upon reading all of the ages of the users in these forums it became evident that maybe they simply did not know that these games existed or they were just simply forgotten, replaced by the graphical greats we see before us today. I only seek to inform individuals of fantastic games that may have been forgotten.

Good day.

Oni? Are you mad? And where's OF?
#5 Posted by MythPro1 (2746 posts) -
If that's the case, then yes I am mad. Also, please spell out the "OF," not very good with acronyms.
#6 Posted by snackdaddy (2122 posts) -
Mech Warrior 3 was fantastic
#7 Posted by snackdaddy (2122 posts) -

Grim Fandango

Monkey Island

Operation Flashpoint

What about Soldiers: Heroes of WW2 for the RTS section?  That was a forgotten epic.  And so was Planetside for FPS/RPG.  They have a free version of that now...
#10 Posted by WaterBug (501 posts) -

Can we add Diablo? 1 and 2. This game was legendary!!

#11 Posted by dacobley (374 posts) -
what about finail liberation, dark omen and chaos gate those great classics
#12 Posted by MythPro1 (2746 posts) -

Operation Flashpoint

Ah forgot about that one and it's one of my favorite games, used to calling it OFP. Added on the list, thanks.

Good call on Soldiers: Heroes of WW2, added onto the list along with Planetside. I wasn't going to add Diablo 2 since it still is pretty well-known, recommended and discussed but I added Diablo. As for the old Warhammer games I own a few of them myself and they have some issues when trying to be installed on XP (like Dark Omen and Final Liberation) so I was a little against having them on the list. Thanks for the ideas though.

Keep em coming guys, I'd like this to be pretty extensive so players know that they are plenty of fantastic games out there.
#13 Posted by Ipimpsnipa (1806 posts) -

Warcraft 2 and Warcraft 3/the frozen throne

definately add those for strategy

also get diablo 2 and LOD on there, needs more rpgs, put on guildwars

#14 Posted by MythPro1 (2746 posts) -
Warcraft 2 added. As mentioned already, D2 and its expansion LOD are already pretty well-known amongst the player base and the same goes for Warcraft 3 and Guildwars. This list is mainly comprised of games that rated well and played excellently but were either overshadowed by other games or were simply forgotten. Thank you for your contribution.
#15 Posted by Pap3rT0wel (2263 posts) -
Deus Ex.
#16 Posted by PC-Gamer (463 posts) -
Neverwinter Nights should be added to the RPG list.
#17 Posted by MythPro1 (2746 posts) -
Neverwinter Nights and Dues Ex added, thank you both.

[QUOTE="MythPro1"]Neverwinter Nights and Dues Ex added, thank you both.

Good post for someone new here.

Good list overall, but needs some additions:

-Independence War (2-part series)

This small space sim series actually comes closer to the term "sim" than most other games out there(with some exceptions, such as Terminus)due to the actual use of Newtonian physics. That, and a highly detailed damage model. The gameplay seems quite good, but I haven't had the fortune of playing a full version of either game.

-Carmageddon (3-part series)

Please tell me you haven't forgotten this one...visceral carnage with motor vehicles at its finest! Don't want to race through checkpoints? Then waste your opponents or try to kill every single pedestrian on the map(unless you're playing TDR, in which strict time limits force you to race!)! Especially satisfying are the powerups introduced in Carma 2, ranging from mines/mortars that blow up anyone unfortunate enough to collide with one, repulsificators that send any nearby opponents or peds flying, and the "mutant tail thing", a mace connected to the back of your vehicle that can be cut off as you spin your vehicle to hit a poor pedestrian and get an Award for Outstanding Achievement!

-Star Control 2: The Ur-Quan Masters

This epic space RPG is a classic in every respect. Great story, great gameplay, excellent music, and it's FREE. Of course, if you don't feel like hopping around the galaxy to collect lifeforms or blow up random aliens or whatever, you can just hop into Super Melee and school a friend...

-Cave Story (Doukutsu Monogatari)

A freeware platformer from Japan that was translated to English not too long ago, I'm sure this game will also fall into the classic category. Gameplay is similar to that of Metroid or post-SotN Castlevania, only with more plot and character interaction. It's said that there are three very different endings that you can get, though I have yet to get even one of them. (I keep getting distracted by other games.)

Oh, and one thing of note: PlanetSide has very little, if any, RPG elements. You'll have to wait until Twilight War to get your MMORPG/FPS hybrid. (That'll probably be the game that'll make me an MMO addict, not WoW or EQ or whatever else they have out there...)

A really amazing list, well worth checking these games out than. I would push for a sticky even, even if only temporarily.
#21 Posted by MythPro1 (2746 posts) -
Independence War, Star Control and Carmageddon added. Thanks for the additons. And thank you guys for the compliments, I'm glad this list is informative and effective.

I don't know if it was mentioned or not'abuot Blitzkrieg 1, Shadows of the Empire, Jedi knight 1/2/3, Dark Forces, DooM 1

Psychonauts was a great game - great art direction and not taxing on the system.
#24 Posted by MythPro1 (2746 posts) -
Psychonauts and Jedi Knight series added, thank you.

Space Cowboy is a good MMO flight sim game. Pretty recent, too.

Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns (the original game) - great game!

Heretic II (well, you had Heretic but you forgot the better Heretic II, probably the best looking Quake 2 Engine game as well)

Interstate '76

#27 Posted by MythPro1 (2746 posts) -
Kohan series, Interstate '76 and Heretic II added, thanks a bunch!

One question, do you have to apply to a moderator in order to get a thread stickied? I think this thread can help people out a great deal, in case this thread were to become pushed back.

I agree with you, Oni is a fantastic game. It joins together gunplay, close combat and sci-fi fantasy with an anime-inspired artestry.

in fact, do you know any other anime-inspired pc games?
#32 Posted by xljohn (431 posts) -
Planescape: Torment

How'd this get left off?
#33 Posted by Mademan033 (54 posts) -
Impeccable taste. NOLF, Interstate, UT, Thief and Deus Ex. All genuine classics. But how the hell did Soldier of Fortune 2 get in there? That has to be one of the most dissapointing games I've ever played. The start was great, but it only went down from there, particularly in level design.
#34 Posted by 65677762 (33 posts) -
Grandia 2 a good RPG
#35 Posted by TheSmacK420 (926 posts) -

I'll fill in some adventure games....a lot of people have missed out on these classics....

Sam and Max: Hit the Road

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis

Broken Sword 1-3

The Dig

The Longest Journey

Full Throttle

Leisure Suit Larry series (excluding the new one)

Day of the Tenticle

#36 Posted by MythPro1 (2746 posts) -
Many of the newer recommendations added, some I don't wish to put on there namely some of the old adventure games since they may be too old in order to work with WinXP or without series modding and emulation. Thanks everyone.

in fact, do you know any other anime-inspired pc games?

Sadly it's the only one I know about and it is one of my favorite games. I would love for Bungie to do a sequel but they are quite busy with Halo 2 for Vista and more then likely busy with Halo 3. They're a console company these days, sorry to say. But if you're looking for nitty gritty combat similar to Oni then I may suggest Die By The Sword. A bit gorier than its counterpart and a little more buggy but it is extremely fun and fulfilling.

Keep em coming guys and thanks again!

You forgot the Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butchers Bay adamownsyou

...didn't look that good. I saw the gameplay video. Yeah, Vin Diesel- not the person I'd play with.

Now if it were Samuel Jackson, hell yeah I WOULD!

#38 Posted by MythPro1 (2746 posts) -
I was expecting more stealth oriented gameplay from Riddick. It was like that in the beginning but eventually turned into a guns blazing extravaganza which threw me off a little. Even because of this shortcoming (imho) it was still a well made and enjoyable game.
#39 Posted by MythPro1 (2746 posts) -
Several additions added for your viewing pleasure.
#40 Posted by ADG_ (1654 posts) -
Why is Dreamfall on that list? It's just an interactive movie And you forgot: The Longest Journey (best adventure ever) GTA 2 (great for quick LAN games... and best of all it's free)
#41 Posted by PhoenixAvngr (377 posts) -
You should definetly add MechWarrior 4: Vengeance and/or MechWarrior4: Mercenaries. (they are both stand alone games, mercenaries is NOT an expansion of vengeance. mechwarrior 4: black knight however IS an expansion to vengeance, lol).

They were terriffic games that not many people play anymore because they are much older.  They both have a great campaign and multiplayer, and even if not many people are online, they still have pretty good AI that can give you a run for your money.

Mech Commander

I hope they make Mech Commander 3...
#43 Posted by MythPro1 (2746 posts) -
Dreamfall: The Longest Journey changed to The Longest Journey, sorry for the confusion I thought they were one of the same :D. MechWarrior 4 V and M added along with MechCommander Series and GTA II, thank you for your contributions.

Don't forget Xwing-Alliance in the sim category

Works great on WinXP, and is getting a graphical overhaul due to the dedicated work of darksaber and co.

Also - anyone interested in Freespace 1 or 2 *needs* to check out the work going on at Hard-Light Productions with the Source Code Project.

#47 Posted by TomJeffJones (78 posts) -

And add 'Nexus: The Jupiter Incident' to the strategy section-

its cheesy....but good.

NFS: Porsche Unleashed. My favourite racing game!
American McGee's Alice.
Commandos 2: Men of Courage.
Fallout 2. Although I don't think it works with XP. Maybe someone knows about a fix, so let us know.
Icewind Dale.
Max Payne 1 and 2.
Rise of Nations.
Serious Sam.
Shogun Total War.

Thanks for this interesting thread!
