Hey guys, I'm looking to buy a good gaming desktop for ~$700. Anyone have any suggestions? I have no clue what's a good desktop brand or what to look for in it, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Looks good. If he adds another $100, he could switch the mechanical disk for a decent sized SSD.

This is true. Components in PC's from companies like Dell and HP, namely the motherboard and PSU, are made to be just good enough to run the hardware that they come with. And even if you didn't do much upgrading, things like the capacitors on the motherboards are usually low quality to save money, and tend to bust open after a few years. And if you decide to overclock, and buy a new bios from phoenix that allows it, you'll likely fry the motherboard due to a lack of VRM and chipset cooling. Lack of VRM cooling can also be a problem if you just decide to upgrade the CPU. And if have to replace the motherboard, then you would also have to purchase a new copy of Windows. Or if you get a better videocard for instance, you would have to get a new power supply as well. So long story short, just build it yourself using quality parts and save yourself all of the hassle down the road...

SSD is still offers far to little storage space for a a main computer at least for gamers and power users. Instead of switching he should just add a a ssd to use as a boot drive and install all non gaming applications and maybe a few games he plays alot and keep the regular hardrive for storage and game installs which take up quite a bit of space and are only going to go up in the future.

That depends on how much you're willing to pay of course.
I think most people would be ok with a 256 GB SSD as system drive, you can fit quite a few games on that.
Then use a big mechanical drive for data storage.

Yeah, and for that you'd get an amazing 2nd gen i3, 6 GB RAM and a GT 640 1GB. Wow.

Its a good machine. Should play all the games on high settings. Its an awesome looking machine too.

Heres a pic of my x51. I have retired my Xbox 360. Just have it there for comparison. I feel like I have a next gen console now.

x51

Why are companies going back to gloss. I still think the old xbox 360 white looks a lot better than that new glossy one.

And even if you have to go prebuilt there are better options than the x51 for the money.

No, it's a really weak PC. You will not be able to play demanding games very well.
Even the most expensive x51 for $1200 isn't a good gaming PC.
Anyone saying that x51 is good does not know what they're talking about.

This is the best one i could find for your budget. I'd highly reccomend customizing the video card to a gtx 660 2gb and paying $10 more for a $500 watt power supply to power it. I would lower the ram down to the cheapest option(4gb is plenty for games right now) and go for air cooling if you really wanted to get the price down the gtx 660 will give you a very noticeable amount of extra performance well worth increasing your budget a bit.

Here some benchmarks showing just how much stronger the gtx 660 is vs the gtx 650(which is the same thing as the ddr5 gt640 in the $700 x51)

More then double the framerate in bf3 at ultra 1080p and even with the gtx 650 running at low settings no AA and 2xAF its still get lower average framerate then the gtx 660 at ultra with 16xAF and 4xAA.

Similair outcome in the Crysis 2 dx11 ultra settings

saving a few bucks isn't worth it but your choice.
