They give players the 'option' to go free to play? I wonder how many players will volunatarily keep paying for it.

And if they do, will they get special benefits?

If you'll look at the restrictions, it can be said as either a simple "paying will make it bearable" or a question "what person interested in this game wouldn't pay?". Personally, I do not like SWTOR as it is as a whole, F2P is just terrible, think of it as trial WoW with at least twice the amount of limitations it already has.

Game just didn't last when i was subbed to it i can't see myself coming back now.

Yes, you get Cartel Points. I have a subscription and already saved up 2500 Cartel Points.

I'd play it, assuming it was pre-hologrind/jedi, Combat Upgrade, and NGE.

I really missed out on that one didn't I? I love my Star Wars but didn't have internet back when it was released. I've heard really good things about it but also bad things as well.

It kinda didn't matter that it was Star Wars based. Sure, you had land speeders and laser rifles and lightsabers, but like most sandbox MMOs, the story was told by player action rather than some great narrative from the developers. It was a great and unique MMO, but not because it was based on Star Wars. I for one am willing to go through the class stories with the free to play restrictions. I haven't played it much so I might be wrong, but the limitations don't look that bad to me. I'll have to see. If they only allow you five backpack slots or something like that, I'll quit right away.

On the F2P Model, they give you 2 free bars which should be more than enough for the class stories. (I only use 2 and the third for social stuff). They also promised that you can play from 1 to 50 and finish all the class stories without spending a cent.

I've heard it's pretty buggy and not many people play, but that's just what I've heard, never tried it myself.

Though you get 25% less XP from enemies and 25% more XP is needed for the next level. So you level up 50% slower than a subscriber which makes even finishing the story a torture, you'll have to do a lot of grinding

Not grinding, lots of side quests. The dev basically said you can finish the main story and all the side quests for free, and if ur having trouble leveling up, you just purchase XP boosters.

I will try out the free stuff, but I won't subscribe. One time unlock fees aren't that bad if they are priced pretty low, but if there is anything that's required on a regular basis, I won't be spending anything. The whole point of F2P is we don't want to pay a subscription. That doesn't mean we don't want to spend money. We just don't want to "rent access". There needs to be a way to permanently unlock everything even if piecemeal (one dungeon, zone, etc. at a time). The whole weekly pass thing is a joke. I hope it fails so they are forced to offer permanent unlocks to endgame content like LOTRO does.

How this works is the free option is much more expensive upfront than the subscription option, but if you play long enough, it ends up being a better deal than the subscription. A while back I added up all the unlocks it would take in LOTRO for a free player to have roughly the same access to everything as a subscriber. It came out to around $500-600. That's a pretty big number, but then I thought about how much I paid for 5 years of WoW.

$15 X (5 years X 12 months) = $900

$600 is a nice discount compared to $900. Even if you always paid 6-month subscriptions, it still comes out to $780, still more than $600. So $600 is roughly 3-4 years of subscription. If you play LOTRO more than 3-4 years, you actually save money over subscribers. Of course most F2P MMOs don't go this route. They have actual required consumables on the cash shop. Things that you will always have to regularly spend real money on. That's no different than a subscription. It's disguised so that most players don't realize this, but it's just the same.

Weekly pass is just that. This game may be fun 1-50, but they've just pushed back the decision point (should I subscribe or not?) to endgame instead of the leveling game. They will get a temporary influx of players until those players get to endgame. Then, the playerbase will shrink again just like before.

Not interested in this game, but I was reading the restrictions some time ago. Unless they changed it I don't see why not just stick to P2P.

Even with XP boosters you still need 25% more XP for the next level than a subscriber. Plus no rest XP.

Though they won't get a cent out of me

Yes they do. The only things "prefered status" get are:

The Sprint ability at Level 1
Access to your Cargo Hold (an 80 item Player Bank)
Access to Secure Trade
The ability to send Mail, including one (1) attachment
Increased allowance for chat message frequencies in Public chat channels (such as /general)
An increased Credits Cap
Access to the Who List
Three (3) additional Sale Slots on the Galactic Trade Network (for a total of 5)
One (1) additional active Crew Skill Slot (for a total of 2)
Reduced skill point respecialization costs
Increased Server queue priority

And that's it. None of these are really neccesary. All useless to me.

Playing through the game is still torture with only 2 quickbars and 50% less XP.

Why is it torture? You just have to do some side quests to cope with the less XP. Some bosses need a group anyway, doesn't matter what level you are. If a game is torture, why play it?

From a tester:

I have been level ing right through all the updates, and found everytime they reverted us to free to play I became increasingly under leveled for the content I was doing. To the point where I had to stop and do anything I could to raise my level before continuing. And I had a xp experience boost going the whole time.

So, doing every sidequest won't be enough. You'll have to do a lot of grinding and replay flashpoints dozens of times (and you don't get any reward items)

Hmm, that sux then. Will have to wait and try out to see how it pans out. How much are the XP Boosters anyway? I think the F2P is mostly for casual players of ToR.

The Tortanic sunk long ago. F2P cannot lift the ship from the sea floor.

even when I was a subber, doing every little quest out there was still less than perfect and a chore, so I don't see how having XP halved is going to make an already tedious process any better
