NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 and GTX 970 next month

According our credible sources NVIDIA decided to skip GeForce 800 series and move straight to 900. Of course there is a simple explanation why did that happen.

For the past two weeks rumors about mobile GeForce 900M have been circulating around the web. Apparently NVIDIA decided to launch mobile GM204-based parts under 900M series, instead of rumored 800MX. While it makes sense for mobile parts (to differentiate Kepler from Maxwell), it would cause chaos in desktop naming consistency.

Long story short, if NVIDIA didn’t rename 800 series to 900 series, we would have desktop 800 and mobile 900M series in relatively short time.

That said, NVIDIA has finally came to the conclusion that synchronizing desktop and mobile platform series is crucial to keeping things simple. So technically there are no desktop 800 series, unless of course NVIDIA decides to launch them as OEM exclusive.

Some of you will ask why did we report about 880 and 870 last month. It’s because the decision to rename GeForce 800 to 900 series was made just recently, at the time these cards were codenamed exactly how we reported.

Okay, so you know how these cards are going to be called, now when should you expect these cards to be released?

We told you there’s a big press event in September. Today we will update this information. The event in question will take place second week of September, most likely between 9th and 10th. However, that is just a ‘paper launch’.

The actual NDA for both cards will lift on September 19th. Bear in mind, those dates may change at any time.

• NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 and GTX 970 NDA lift date — September 19th

NVIDIA will release both GeForce GTX 980 and GTX 970 in two weeks, while GTX 960 is expected somewhere in October. In the same month NVIDIA will also launch its mobile series — GeForce 900M, introducing first mobile GM204-based graphics cards.

Why not callled their mobile just under 800MX and leaving the original series to 800?

Don't get fooled by the latest and greatest.

Just buy the prior series and get basically the same performance with a lower price.

I've been waiting 9 months since my card died, I'm getting a 970 most likely.

Interesting. I have been sitting on my 6870 for some time now, and I would like to upgrade. But, if the performance numbers floating around for the 980/970 are true, then I will likely wait till some higher end cars come out.

For those who are looking to upgrade, be patient. Now is a bad time to be buying high-end cards. I would expect prices to drop once Nvidia releases these cards.

If it's like any other new design release then the 960 will perform similar to the 780.

It's been like that for around a decade.

Mid end new design have performed similar to high end version of old design.

So the cards are still basically coming out, and around the same time period as we were thinking, however they are just renamed to the GTX 9 series? What they are called really doesn't affect me much, I just want to see the exact date that they launch, and the price/performance ratio.

I want a serious GPU, I will wait another 6 months if I have to. If the 980/970 aren't up to the performance increase I seek, I will wait for their refresh lineup.

My GTX580 is just fine thanks.

I already upgraded to a R9 290 from a 570. It was a huge improvement but I still feel like my CPU (a 8350) is bottlenecking my new video card. AMD needs to get their crap together and put out a new high performance CPU.

They did the same before. I wouldn't trust anything until its official...

Edit I would love the name GTX970/980 too since they might want to give the performance to justify the name gap :).

This is kinda what I am hoping, This way it will be significantly more powerful than the GTX7 series.

Cause for a GTX9 series to be barely any better than the GTX7 series, that won't help Nvidia's image.

That's what I'm thinking... I think, I'll wait a year or longer till upgrading.

Because calling it 900 would make it sound like a more "significant" leap in tech and make the 780/780 TI sound old, and push people to buy new hardware faster.

Well, yes and no.

That might be true but I will remind everyone that when Nvidia decided to skip a number the performance leap was huge.

From 9800GTX to GTX280 (skipped GTX1xx series and released them laters as lower chips).

From GTX280 to GTX480 (skipped GTX3xx series and released them laters as lower chips).

So fron G92 to G200 and to GF100 the gap was so huge that they were faster than the dual chips graphics cards of their previous generations.

So GTX980 of TitanZ performance plx :P
