Hey guys. I have a :

4870x2 w/ most latest non-beta driver available.

4gb DDR2 RAM

E8400 @ 3.4ghz

Gigabyte X48 mobo.

I'm playing at 1920x1200 but getting quite poor performance in Grand Theft Auto 4. I have all settings to high (not very high, where possible) and the individual sliders for Draw distance, shadows and texture detail, i have only half high (these make the biggest difference). So, even FAR from maxing the game out, i'm only getting an average of 15-20 fps in the game.

Help!

I believe Rockstar said something about GTA IV and ATI cards aren't mixing well and they are releasing a patch for it. This was asid before GTA IV came out though so...... yeah lol

I've played this game through on the xbox360, so this poor ati optimization news has just put the nail in the coffin. No chance of me buying this game now. Good job Rockstar.

It ain't just you bro. This game runs like crap. I mean I have to run it on low with an E8400, 9800GTX 512, 4 gigs of RAM. Another poor Rockstar port. It's ridiculous. I hope reviewers use retail copies instead of the rockstar versions they played at there office.

I have another issue with this game. The moment I am in-game, or running a benchmark, my screen goes messed up, buggy and what not.

**** THIS.

A few weeks ago we got the GTA 4 requirements and to my suprise a Quad Core was the recommended CPU. Ok No problem, so I upgraded from my old but powerfull Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4 Ghz to get me a nice new shiney Q9300. With that, a new motherboard and a new graphics card came as well, because IMO GTA 4 was the most anticipated PC Game this year (especially us guys with no consoles) and i really wanted to enjoy the PC version in all its glory, but THE ****ING PERFORMANCE SUCKS ASS. I regret buying this damn game.

Running at 1680 X 1050 with everything on low and i cant breach the 45 FPS mark.

The framerate is dipping below the 20 FPS mark much too frequently, im getting like an average of 25 FPS. Did Rockstar just drop a stupid unoptimized port or is this a nightmare.

My System:

MOBO: Asus P5Q-DLX

CPU: Core 2 Q9300 @ 2.83GHz

GFX: Saphire HD 4870 1024MB (Cat 8.11)

MEMORY: 4 GIGS (2x2Gigs Patriot Extreme PC9600)

Power : 850W

I Recommend You do not get this game untill a patch is out to fix up the ****ed up performance or buy an Xbox 360 or PS3 and play it on that.

I thought for a minute maybe this game is optimized for Nvidia, so I went and took out my HD 4870 1024Mb and replaced it with my brothers 8800GT (180.43 beta drivers) and to my surprise, performance still sucks ass.

Sorry Guys it seems that it does not matter what GPU you got, performance is still gonna suck.

I just went to the gtaforums.com, and wow! People with GTX260's, ATI 4870s, quad cores and 4gb ram are finding the game not playable. I even saw a post of how one user emailed R* support and was told that 20fps was 'playable'. Utter bullsh*t.

This game is probably one of the worst console-to-pc ports ever, judging from the people who played it, or should I say, tried playing, so far.

Its sad really, A dual core cpu ,2-4gb of ram and a 8600gt is more than a match for a xbox360. And yet with the best hardware out there thats 4x+ better cant run the game. And they wonder why Pc games get pirated hmm.

I already played it on the 360, and I'm looking to re-buy it for the PC. Thanks for the heads up. I'll more than likely hold off on this one until they fix it. I can't say I'm surprised though. The system requirements for min. and recommended were unusually high. ATi always get shafted.. sigh.

I'm returning my copy directly when it arrives tomorrow..

i guess we should have forseen this since Bully wasnt properly ported either, i guess they just make some fast, half-assed emulation. I'm expecting Rockstar to respond / whine about how piracy has forced them to cut down on the PC side of things and this is the side effect bla bla..

Well, since I just bought Fallout 3 for PC (which is currently experiencing easily its own fair share of problems), I believe I might just hold off on purchasing GTA IV for PC just yet. I don't understand why more extensive beta testing can't be taken to attempt to eliminate these problems. Just push those deadlines back slightly, and release a game that works for everyone.

My game is running decently at around 30 fps, but I'm getting some graphics glitches. The shadows are jumping around EVERYWHERE. It makes it look like there's a strobe light going off throughout the entire game. I'm running a Q6600 @ 2.4, 4gb ram, and ATI 4850. Any advice on how to fix this problem?

I was going to go out and buy this today, but after the horror stories I've heard I think it's a good idea to wait.

I was expecting that I could play GTA pretty darn well with my specs (in sig) at 1920x1200 res, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I'm tempted to go buy it anyway, I just don't want to have to tone the settings way down or sacrifice res (let alone framerate), which looks to be the case.

Not just that, but it seems that the game is glitchy as hell to boot.:(

Oh well, we'll see...

Not only is the performance poor, the graphics are not even half as good as the 360 and PS3 versions minus the sharp resolutions the PC version has to offer. This is for the medium texture option tho and from I can see no one else can put the textures to high or very high either. It seems you can either pick low or medium. I'm able to run Crysis and many other games just fine. Anyways, I wish I didn't jump right in and pick the game up during work hours. I shoulda waited until I got home and read the reviews but as seeing how the previous GTA ports worked out, there was no way GTA4 can fail on the PC but I was wrong. I regret my purchase of GTA4 for the PC at this time and I doubt Rockstar will support this clumsy port just like how they haven't released any patches yet to fix Bully.

Specs:

  • Windows Vista 64 Ultimate
  • Core 2 Duo E6850 3.0GHZ
  • Asus P5Q Motherboard
  • BFG 9800GTX OCX Edition
  • 4x1024 Crucial Ballistix at 1033DDR2
  • Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatality Pro

I am playing the game and it works with some problems.

Specs:Q6600@ 3.6ghz, 4GB 1066mhz DDR2, HD 4870, Asus Rampage Formula, 1920x1200 res

First the Rockstar "Lounge" program is completely messed. The game will crash unless you skip logging in. I cannot go above medium texture settings in the graphics options. In order to run 1920x1200 I cannot have a draw distance past 14. It's ridiculous that the game would limit what you can set, it should be left to the user. Forcing AA through catalyst control center also does not work. With that said, the game runs fine, but it's in dire need of a patching. I hope that these problems can be fixed, and it would be really nice to see some anti aliasing implemented.

This is found on the Rockstar website may help some to try and get better performance if possible. Reading this it gives a little better understanding on how and what settings should be applied. Its seems the sliders shouldn't be set too high since they state the console equivalents are on the low end of the scale and the console version if we remember had somewhat poor performance. Shadow density slider is also exclusive to PC so that'll make an impact too so keep that on low.

Furthermore by the looks of it seems a quad core does make a difference to this game. Still I think its no excuse for the poor port we have received. I haven't got the game yet as I was waiting to know how this performed first so now I am pondering whether I should, will wait a little. Seems like a great disappointement, shame.

So anyway I guess don't crank the sliders all the way up.

I've also read that the game locks out higher settings if it can't run them so that may address one of the posters above me, I don't know if there is a work around that yet.

Higher settings for future PC's. Well they said the same for Crysis and it still ran well so not so great here.

http://www.rockstargames.com/support/req_support_detail.php?product=275%2C3%2CGrand+Theft+Auto+IV%2CPC%2CRockstar_Games%2Cgta4&submit=Submit

THE GRAPHIC SETTINGS OF GRAND THEFT AUTO IV PC

Most users using current PC hardware as of December 2008 are advised to use medium graphics settings. Higher settings are provided for future generations of PCs with higher specifications than are currently widely available.

Graphics settings are limited by system resources by default. 256MB video cards force minimum settings by default. If a user bypasses these safety measures using command line arguments and exceeds their system resources, the users gaming experience may be compromised.

Video Mode
Resolution scaling effects water, reflections, shadows, mirrors and the visible viewable distance. The resolution settings relate to the amount of available video memory. At 2560*1600 the game will require 320MB of video memory in addition to all the memory required for content. At 800*600 the game will require 32MB of video memory in addition to the content. Medium resolution settings are recommended for most users as higher settings are only usable if there is available video memory.

Texture Quality
Texture quality affects the visual quality of the content of the game. High setting for textures will require 600MB of video memory at a setting of 21 View Distance in addition to the memory taken by the Video Mode. A medium texture setting is recommended for most users.

Render Quality
Render quality is the texture filter quality used on most things in the world rendering. Most people would know this as anisotropic filtering. Medium settings are recommended for most users and will provide filtering beyond what the console versions can execute.

View Distance
View distance scales the distance in which different objects in the world such as building and cars are seen. Raising this option increases the distance in which high quality objects must be loaded and will increase the memory it requires. Restrictions are established to ensure the game runs optimally for most users. A setting of 22 or more will provide PC users an enhanced experience over the console versions.

Detail Distance
Detail distance scales aspects of the environment that the View Distance setting does not including vegetation, trash and other moveable objects. A setting of 10 would be the equivalent to the performance on a console. This setting has little effect on memory.

Vehicle Density
Vehicle density scales the traffic density of the traffic in the game. It has no effect on the mission vehicles or difficultly of the game, but can have a significant impact on CPU performance

Shadow Density
Shadow Density controls the number of shadows generated for positional lights in exterior environments. These shadows are exclusive to the PC version and can have a major impact on CPU and GPU performance.

Crossfire/SLI
With the latest ATI driver (8-11 series) the game supports crossfire modes (ie. 4870x2)
SLI is currently unsupported. Support will be added through a future game patch as well as an updated Nvidia driver.

NOTE: Background Processes
Certain background processes can have a detrimental effect on system performance when playing GTA IV, especially on systems with minimum required system memory. Users should ensure they disable their Virus scans (especially "on-access" type scans) when running the game to maximize performance.
