where do people reckon it stands against other cards? as good as a 7850 or better? worth the buy or just an attempt to "boost" sales? (pun intended)

The GTX 650 TI boost is a counter to ATI's 7790 which just came out (There was a large gap between the $110 7770 and the $190 7850 so ATI decided to release something in the middle). Supposedly the 2GB version (which is $169) trades blows with the 7850

It doesn't make sense that Nvidia released that card when the GTX 660 is available for roughly £20 - £30 more with extra juice...

I'm pretty sure that people would be happy to pay a small amount of cash for that extra performance.

The problem with PC hardware is that there will always be a better option for 'just a bit more'. You have to stop somewhere otherwise you end up spending far more than you wanted to. The 650ti boost is a counter to the 7790 which was designed to fill a large gap, so they're both filling a fairly large gap. 650ti to 660 is a fairly large gap that needed filling.

It fills the incremental power/price step well. Should be considered for people looking to upgrade on a budget who want more than a 7770 but can't make the jump to the 7850 or 660.

According to reviews its a better card than a HD 7850. It's understandable since the GTX 650 Ti Boost is essentially a cut down GTX 660 a card that competes with HD 7870's.

I don't think Nvidia intended to counter the 7790 since the price and perfromance of the 650 Ti Boost is counter the HD 7850 2GB. Mind you now that this card is out its making the GTX 660 pointless because you could save money and get a GTX 650 Ti Boost or spend just a little more and get a GTX 660 Ti.

There are four segments for GPU recommendations:

  • HD 7770 - GTX 650
  • HD 7850 - GTX 650 Ti Boost
  • HD 7950 - GTX 660 Ti
  • HD 7970 - GTX 670
All the other cards can be ignored due to price performance ratios. Also these segments are for single monitor setups and 1920x1080 being the highest resolution in mind. Every PC gamer should be able to afford one of these segments and the choice between red or green is blurred, it doesn't matter if you go Nvidia or AMD.

while 660 OC is better i must say a GTX 570 With what appear around  75% LESS Power consumption for 170$ that will be likely be 155$ AFTER MIR by Fall is a Good Card
Hopefully by then nvidia make refresh like GTX 780 / GTX 770 / GTX 760 until Maxwell Launch

I'm hoping there'll be a 760 with 670 performance for ~£170.

660 offered 570-580 performance for 560 price so it could be possible.

its a good option as is the newly launch 7790 The problem though is the 1gb 7850 is offered at similar if not lower price than 650ti/7790 ( though the 1gb puts off some people is still a great option as long as you dont plan gaming over 1080p )
