Online multiplayer, any game suggestions?

Hello,

I would like to play online mulitplayer games with friends on the pc. Preferably, free, downloadable games where you can create your own server. Whether it is a racing, fighting, shooting etc. game is doesn't matter. It has to be playable on a windows and a linux computer. Does anyone have any suggestions?
