I use a 42" HDTV for PC gaming when downstairs in front room, when I fancy the couch controller set up if I'm playing a game that suites it.,

The TV I use is really old and needs replacing, although it still works fine. Its one of the early plasma TV's and its made by orion. It was made when HDTV was in its infancy so its only 720p/1080i.

I knew this because when I use my ps3/360 with this TV they are the only display option thats appear, as the TV does not support 1080p.

However I just noticed my PC running windows 8.1 recommended my resolution to be 1920x1080, (1080p) this was in the resolution settings.

When I changed my TV it worked fine.

Odd ? I'm 99% sure the TV I was using does not support this resolution, however with Windows it can, unless Windows is incorrect and its actually displaying at 1080i.

@thehig1: Is your pc outputting to 1080p and the tv is downscaling to 720p? What does it say when you check info on that connection on your tv?

@thehig1:When you are on the input you don't have a button on the remote that says info?

I expect, as suggested above, the TV is simply scaling the input.

When I set the display to 1280x768 (720p) the icons and everything is much larger than on 1920x1080 (1080p) isn't that what happens when you increase resolution,

Is it possible the TV is displaying windows at 1080i, I think my TV supports that

probably. 1080i with fast motion gives you ghost-lines because it's interlaced. is that what happens when you play a fast game or watch a video?

Take a 1080p image, shrink it to 720p, all the icons will be smaller.

@thehig1: 1280x768 is a monitor 720p. 1280x720 is a tv 720p. It still could be scaling to 720p down from 1080p and still look different.

So when I set my resolution to 1280x720 there are a couple of fuzzy lines on the screen that distort the picture, however on 1280x768 it looks perfect.

Well it used too until I updated to the catalyst 14.9 driver, now the picture is still good but doesn't fit on the screen properly.

So I have to set it at 1920x1080, I'm assuming its 1080i, ill play a game at that resolution and see what happens

i believe you when you say this... i can run my 1080p monitor and 1080p plasma tv at a resolution of 3200 x 1800 even though they don't even run at it. Games don't look any better, its just a fun res to run at if im taking screenshots cause it gives you a lot more detail with those.

I'd probably stick with 720p on that tv though.

@Old_Gooseberry: although at 720 not everything fits in the screen since my gpu driver update.

Will it damage my tv at all by keeping it at this resolution.

it only needs to last me a few more months until I get a better tv

Yeah convinced thats what it is, Catalyst control settings say its 1080i, and your right 1080 is still 1920x1080, its just interlaced and not progressive scan so windows would display it as that
