Just got a new mobo +cpu and i need a new cpu cooler.

I7 4790k + asrock fatality killer z97x

Intels stock cooler lets it idle around 60c when it first starts up and **** that.

Im expecting to spend around $50 U.S.

My case is a cooler master centurion 5 (mid tower)

Any suggestions are much needed. I have to order it today if i want it by this weekend

Good old Centurion 5 case. When I upgraded in October, I gave my brother my old system, which included a CM V8 and without the side 80mm airduct it actually fit inside with no issue. You will be able to fit any cooler under 162 mm in height.

Here are a few coolers to look at.

Hyper 212+ EVO

Deepcool Gammaxx 400

Cooler master Seidon 120v

I would recommend on EVO 212 or Seidon 120V as well

If you have any interest in overclocking, I'll be the "upgrade devil" and say that if you spent ~$25 more than $50, you can get one of the best air CPU coolers money can buy( like the Noctua NH-D14). Then you can do much bigger overclocks while maintaining a much more quiet system. Think of it as a cheap but decent performance boost, as well as an investment (you can lug it onto a future CPU and expect great OCing then too)

Otherwise if you aren't overclocking and don't really want to push it (in terms of budget and OCing), a Hyper 212+ EVO would do you very well.

Well depending on what those fans are doing you have too at static pressure and the airflow

But for a good all around fan with long life would be the Cougar Vortex

Honestly, I've bought products from just about every vendor. High end twin tower air coolers, lcs coolers, etc, from different vendors.

My bottom line recommend? Whatever Noctua twin tower cooler that fits your gear.

Comparable with the best lcs, with barely any noise. For performance/noise, nothing comes close.

That is...if you handle the brown (I love brown...so no biggie)

As a side note...I've bought fans from every vendor out there as well...but nothing is as great as a Noctua fan. Their performance and noise profile is untouchable. 20-30 for a fan? Yes...they ARE pricey, but they will last forever, and are so quiet.

Evo is the newer model with 4 heatpipes directly touching the CPU and with nothing between them to trap the heat. Also the surface that touches the CPU is smoother.

It coveres my FX-6300 perfectly, maybe if your CPU is smaller the outer heatpipes would be less effective, but it would still be good. If you opt for CM get a better thermal paste like Arctic Silver or Prolimatech PK-3 to get the most out of it. Or just get a Noctua :).

A 212 evo will put you in the mid 4ghz range will being very cost effective and less noise than stock cooler (in the USA they usually run for $20-30).

The noctua's are nice but are not nearly as cost effective (you pay 2-3x the price and at the end of the day your CPU might reach 100-200mhz more than the evo). On the plus side the noctua's will run cooler, less noise then both stock/evo, and your motherboard should be able to utilize the high overclocks of the 4790K.

Overall is depends on how far you want to take this (do you want something that will drop noise/temps while offering some overclocking room or do you want something that can help you fully utilize your motherboard/CPU )

I decided to go with the 212 evo, arctic 5 silver, and 3x cougar vertexs. Maybe put a vertex on the 212 if the original is too loud. If i dont like the evo then ill get the noctua nh d 14. Summer it gets hot here in cali

You will like the evo, I have one on my i5 4690k, with two fans, and have the fan rpm tied to the temps. The stock fan on the evo gets loud when it get close to or at its max rpm.

@04dcarraher: will i be able to replace the cm fan with one of of my cougars? As i set the cpu fan to max in the bios at all times.

My gtx 570s already burn the spot with the whole noise thing. Loud a.f.

Yes you can replace the CM fan with one of the cougars, just make sure the fan is blowing through the heat sink, pushing the hot air through the fins.

like below

Ill probably end up trying push and pull config. Has anyone else done this and have it make a difference?

Got me thinking, I still use the stock fan on the 212 Evo, now I understand that high static pressure fans are the way to go for heatsinks, but that applies to front (push) fans. What about rear (pull)? Would I be better off with a high RPM/low static pressure case fan?

My 212+ has a pair of PWM corsair SP120 quiet editions on it, silent but great cooling.
